Riciclo del vetro, un successo e un futuro promettente
Louisa Gathecha, co-fondatrice e Business Development Lead di Bottle Logistics, punta a far diventare la sua società di riciclaggio del vetro la più grande del Kenya entro i prossimi due anni.
“Siamo pionieri nella trasformazione dell’industria dei rifiuti di vetro”. Così si definisce Bottle Logistics sul suo sito web. Tra i loro prodotti di punta ci sono rottami di vetro, bottiglie riutilizzabili e aggregati di vetro. Recuperano e riciclano, trasformando bottiglie e vasi in rottami di vetro altamente raffinati. Un business che abbraccia il concetto di “economia circolare” e lo applica alla gestione dei rifiuti: ridurre, riutilizzare e riciclare i rifiuti. I loro numeri raccontano una storia di successo: 333 tonnellate di emissioni di CO2 ridotte e 2.000 tonnellate di rifiuti di vetro in discarica riciclate, con una capacità di riciclo mensile attuale di 1.000 tonnellate. A guidare questa azienda, che punta a diventare la società di riciclaggio del vetro più grande del Kenya entro i prossimi due anni, una donna, Louisa Gathecha, co-fondatrice e Business Development Lead di Bottle Logistics. È lei che ci racconta la sua sfida di donna nel business (con un’azienda in cui il 75% del personale è composto da donne), gli obiettivi e i progetti per il futuro.

Come definisce l’economia circolare, e che effetti sta avendo sull’economia e sull’ambiente in Kenya?
L’economia circolare è un sistema economico che mira a trasformare i rifiuti in materie prime riciclate per la produzione di nuovi prodotti. Sta portando cambiamenti positivi all’economia e all’ambiente del paese perché garantisce l’eliminazione dei rifiuti, riduce l’uso delle risorse naturali e riduce le emissioni di carbonio, tutti fattori a favore della tutela dell’ambiente. Il sistema dell’economia circolare crea inoltre molte opportunità di lavoro e consente l’accesso di molte persone ai mezzi di sussistenza, in linea con gli Obiettivi di sviluppo sostenibile (SDG, Sustainable Development Goals) dell’ONU. L’utilizzo del rottame di vetro consente alle aziende produttrici di vetro di ridurre le emissioni di CO2.
Qual è il suo modello di business? Quali sono i pilastri fondamentali del suo lavoro, della sua azienda?
Il modello di business prevede il recupero dei rifiuti di vetro industriali e post-consumo e la loro riconversione in rottame di vetro altamente raffinato, che le aziende locali impiegano poi come materia prima per la produzione di nuovi prodotti in vetro. Lavoriamo anche con aziende del settore Food&Beverage, a livello locale, recuperando da loro le bottiglie di vetro usate, per il successivo riutilizzo. I pilastri chiave della nostra operatività sono di fatto il recupero efficiente dei rifiuti di vetro, attraverso solide collaborazioni che si estendono lungo la catena del valore, e la continua ricerca di soluzioni innovative per il riciclaggio del vetro. Inoltre, costruiamo dispositivi solidi e robusti per il reso e il riuso dei vuoti, per diversi marchi.
Avete ricevuto risorse finanziarie dal progetto Incubator. Il frantumatore che avete acquistato in che modo ha inciso sulle performance dell’azienda?
I finanziamenti ricevuti tramite E&I ci hanno permesso di acquistare un frantumatore per vetro che ha aumentato la nostra capacità produttiva da 30 a più di 600 tonnellate al mese. Questi fondi ci hanno anche consentito di soddisfare le specifiche di qualità della maggior parte dei fornitori, e da giugno inizieremo a esportare rottame di vetro verde in Tanzania, per Kioo Glass.
Lei ha creato una rete di oltre 30 partner tra bar, ristoranti a società di raccolta dei rifiuti, e ha integrato nella catena del valore anche i raccoglitori di rifiuti informali: come c’è riuscita, e com’è percepita la sua attività a Nairobi?
Ho lavorato a stretto contatto con enti di settore quali la Pubs, Entertrainment and Restaurants Association of Kenya (PERAK), per raggiungere i bar e i ristoranti del paese, e con la Kenyan Association of Waste Recyclers (KAWR), per ampliare la nostra rete di raccoglitori di rifiuti. La percezione della raccolta e del riciclaggio dei rifiuti in Kenya sta pian piano evolvendo e migliorando. I consumatori e tutta la popolazione in generale sono sempre più consapevoli della necessità di differenziare e riciclare i rifiuti di vetro. Comunque, molti sono rimasti sorpresi quando ho lasciato il mio precedente impiego da dirigente per dedicarmi al settore del riciclaggio informale dei rifiuti!
Che cosa significa essere un imprenditore donna in Kenya?
Essere un imprenditore donna in Kenya oggi è un’esperienza dinamica ed eccitante. Ho trovato il supporto tecnico e finanziario di cui avevo bisogno, pur in un settore prevalentemente maschile, e mi sono impegnata a far salire di livello la mia azienda: abbiamo in programma di diventare la società di riciclaggio del vetro più grande del Kenya entro i prossimi due anni. Sono certa che la mia azienda ha un futuro di prosperità, anche se il settore è a predominanza maschile.
Ci sono donne nella sua azienda?
Sì, attualmente circa il 75% del personale è costituito da donne.
Come ha gestito l’impatto del Covid sulla sua azienda? Quali sono le prospettive per il futuro? Può dirci qualcosa dei suoi prossimi progetti?
Il periodo del Covid è stato davvero molto difficile, e la maggior parte dei nostri clienti ha dovuto chiudere per il lockdown. A due mesi dalla riapertura, tuttavia, il Covid ha offerto nuove opportunità, devo proprio dirlo. Certo, ora è diverso: i consumi si sono spostati dall’on-trade all’off-trade. La maggior parte delle aziende non riusciva a recuperare i vuoti, e così tante ci hanno dato in appalto la raccolta e la prima fase di lavaggio. Questo ci ha consentito di avviare, lo scorso settembre, un nuovo ramo d’azienda dedicato ai dispositivi per il reso e il riuso dei vuoti, che a oggi costituisce il 60 percento dei nostri ricavi totali. Siamo anche riusciti ad acquisire nuovi clienti per il trattamento dei vuoti usati. Quanto alle prospettive per il futuro, proprio grazie all’opportunità dei dispositivi per il reso e il riuso, nata durante la pandemia, abbiamo in programma di automatizzare il processo di lavaggio delle bottiglie usate installando una linea di lavaggio automatica.
