A San Donato Milanese, alle porte di Milano, abbiamo il nostro Centro Ricerche dedicato al mondo Oil&Gas, un cluster di laboratori scientifici che lavorano con una doppia finalità: sviluppare tecnologie innovative per le attività dei settori upstream e downstream e fornire assistenza e supporto tecnico in ogni momento alle attività operative. È qui che analizziamo i campioni di roccia, olio e gas estratti dai pozzi per fornire i dati necessari a guidare tutte le nostre attività di esplorazione e sviluppo dei giacimenti. Ed è sempre qui che sono nate tecnologie di grande impatto come EST - Slurry Technology, che abbiamo portato all’industrializzazione presso la raffineria di Sannazzaro de’ Burgondi e che esportiamo in Cina e nel mondo. Una sezione a parte, inoltre, è dedicata alle tecnologie ambientali per il recupero di terreni contaminati, in particolare con la tecnica del fitorimedio.

Il Centro Ricerche di San Donato Milanese è stato inaugurato nel 1985, nella frazione di Bolgiano, integrando le storiche strutture di ricerca di Metanopoli in un complesso innovativo dotato di strumentazioni scientifiche all’avanguardia. La struttura si estende su 34 mila metri quadrati e impiega circa 290 addetti fra ricercatori, tecnici e staff. I progetti di ricerca riguardano ogni aspetto dei segmenti upstream e downstream, con l’obiettivo condiviso di ridurre i rischi, consolidare le conoscenze tecnologiche e ottenere maggiore qualità, efficienza e sostenibilità dei processi, degli impianti e dei prodotti. Multidisciplinarietà e integrazione accomunano le competenze tecnico-scientifiche messe in campo in questi laboratori, che spaziano dalle geoscienze all’ingegneria, dalla chimica alla scienza dei materiali. Il Centro Ricerche di San Donato Milanese si mantiene in stretto contatto di collaborazione con gli altri Centri Ricerche Eni e con le principali Università e Centri di Ricerca in Italia e nel mondo, tra cui il MIT di Boston, i Politecnici di Milano e Torino e le Università di Bologna, Napoli e Pavia.
Ogni aspetto del lavoro di ricerca condotto nei laboratori di San Donato è pensato per avere un’applicazione concreta a livello industriale, mirando a raggiungere nuovi traguardi di efficienza e sostenibilità. Grazie alle analisi condotte sui campioni di rocce e idrocarburi, integrate ai dati sismici, riusciamo a riprodurre in tempi brevi modelli di giacimento che rendono più efficienti e sicure le nostre operazioni upstream. I dati delle nostre geoscienze sperimentali vanno quindi ad alimentare il nostro potente sistema di elaborazione digitale per simulare le dinamiche del sottosuolo in modo sempre più preciso. Con le strumentazioni disponibili, inoltre, si conducono test per EOR con prodotti da noi formulati (Smart Fluids for Water Blocking) e si fornisce assistenza specialistica ai siti produttivi per una progressiva ottimizzazione delle operazioni. Al tempo stesso qui abbiamo sviluppato Eni Slurry Technology (EST), una tecnologia che ha fatto compiere un grande salto in avanti nella sostenibilità di tutto il settore downstream poiché permette di ricavare carburanti di qualità dai greggi molto pesanti e dai residui meno nobili della raffinazione. E di nuovo in questi laboratori è nata l’idea di realizzare la prima bioraffineria al mondo, messa in pratica con la riconversione della raffineria di Venezia. Dopo questo primo successo, anche la raffineria di Gela è stata interamente riconvertita in bioraffineria. Grazie agli studi condotti dai ricercatori di San Donato Milanese, inoltre, stiamo sviluppando progetti innovativi per la cattura, stoccaggio e utilizzo della CO2 e la valorizzazione del gas naturale. Sempre in questi laboratori, inoltre, stiamo sviluppando tecnologie per il recupero di aree contaminate, in particolare terreni inquinati da idrocarburi e/o metalli pesanti che possono essere rimossi con il fitorimedio. Nella loro molteplicità, tutte le attività di ricerca dei laboratori di San Donato si integrano fra loro creando continue sinergie tra gli approfondimenti dei laboratori di analisi chimico-fisica e le sperimentazioni negli impianti pilota. Dotati di strumentazione d’avanguardia, i ricercatori studiano in laboratorio le proprietà di materiali di diversa natura: dalle rocce ai catalizzatori, dai bio-oli ai depositi, dai superconduttori ai liquidi ionici. Parallelamente, negli impianti pilota, tecnici e ingegneri testano sul campo l’evoluzione delle linee di ricerca. In un dialogo continuo tra scienza e industria.
All’interno del Centro Ricerche di San Donato Milanese abbiamo realizzato una sala 3D che riproduce simulazioni dei nostri impianti attraverso la realtà virtuale. Indossando un Head Mounted Display e degli occhiali 3D possiamo condurre dei programmi di addestramento professionali singoli e di gruppo. La demo è usata per lavorare sui processi di sicurezza, per effettuare la verifica ergonomica dell’impianto interagendo con gli oggetti tramite strumenti innovativi come l’Hand Tracker e per addestrarsi virtualmente sul crisis management, come fanno gli astronauti o i piloti.
