Nel 2022 Eni Côte d’Ivoire, in partnership con il Governo Ivoriano e la ONG AVSI, ha avviato un progetto che promuove la distribuzione di fornelli migliorati. L’obiettivo è quello di ridurre il consumo di biomassa legnosa e le emissioni associate: questo vantaggio ambientale si traduce nella generazione di crediti di carbonio (Verified Carbon Units - VCU), certificati da standard internazionali, che nei prossimi dieci anni permetteranno di compensare le emissioni residuali Scope 1+2 dello sviluppo di Baleine.
Il programma prevede la distribuzione di 300.000 fornelli in 7 anni di cui beneficeranno oltre 1 milione di persone. A stabilire i requisiti di reporting e monitoraggio, per la qualificazione della riduzione delle emissioni di carbonio e la verifica, la convalida e la certificazione dei VCU, è la società americana VERRA, partner anch’essa del progetto.
A differenza dei metodi tradizionali di cottura, come il focolare a tre pietre, questi nuovi sistemi sono alimentati a legna o a carbone e possiedono un’elevata efficienza termica. Il loro vantaggio sta nell’essere una misura di contrasto alla deforestazione, perché permettono di ridurre la quantità di biomassa legnosa utilizzata fino al 60%. Il disboscamento è infatti un problema concreto per la Costa d’Avorio: qui, negli ultimi sessanta anni, è scomparso oltre il 90% delle foreste, tanto da rendere il Paese uno di quelli con il più alto tasso anno di deforestazione in tutta l’Africa. A questo si aggiunge la conseguente riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra e di fumo da combustione, pericoloso per la salute.
I fornelli distribuiti da Eni sono interamente prodotti in Costa d’Avorio da un’impresa locale, la Green Ker, che è così riuscita a incrementare la propria capacità del 150%, acquistando così nuovi macchinari e assumendo cinque nuovi lavoratori. Il progetto, infatti, vuole favorire la crescita della catena produttiva nel Paese a sostegno di una transizione verso fonti energetiche più sostenibili.
Cuore dell’iniziativa è poi la progressiva sensibilizzazione delle famiglie a favore dell’adozione di questi sistemi di cottura meno impattanti per la salute e per l’ambiente. Pertanto, anche il rapporto con i villaggi e le comunità, e insieme all’assistenza prestata alle singole famiglie, sono elementi cruciali del lavoro degli operatori coinvolti.
Questa iniziativa è un caso esemplare, in quanto per la prima volta Eni ha registrato direttamente a nome proprio un progetto di generazione di crediti di carbonio presso lo standard certificatore, anziché affidarsi a terzi.

L’Agenda 2030 per lo Sviluppo Sostenibile è un programma d’azione sottoscritto nel settembre 2015 da 193 Paesi membri dell’ONU che ingloba 17 obiettivi tesi allo sviluppo socio-economico delle comunità e dei territori. Con la distribuzione dei fornelli migliorati, contribuiremo al raggiungimento dei seguenti obiettivi:
SDG 1 (le famiglie potranno ridurre le spese per l’acquisto di legna e/o carbone, con un impatto positivo sulle finanze domestiche)
SDG 3 (verrà ridotta l’esposizione ai fumi della combustione contribuendo alla riduzione dell’incidenza di malattie respiratorie, una delle principali cause di morte, soprattutto tra i bambini e le donne)
SDG 5 (le donne potranno ridurre significativamente il tempo che normalmente dedicano alla raccolta della legna e alla cottura dei cibi)
SDG 7 (viene promossa l'adozione di soluzioni di cottura più pulite ed economiche. I fornelli migliorati, infatti, hanno un'efficienza termica più che doppia rispetto ai meccanismi di cottura tradizionali e consentono alle famiglie di ridurre significativamente la quantità di biomassa consumata)
SDG 8 (attraverso la produzione locale e la distribuzione di fornelli migliorati si sostiene la catena di produzione nel paese, aumentando il numero di utenti che utilizzano questa tecnologia e di potenziali nuovi clienti, con un effetto positivo sul tessuto economico locale)
SDG 13 (contribuiamo alla riduzione delle emissioni di gas serra e a contrastare il fenomeno della deforestazione).
La collaborazione con Eni ci ha permesso di incrementare notevolmente la capacità produttiva attraverso l'acquisto di macchinari e strumenti. Siamo stati anche in grado di aumentare le condizioni salariali dei dipendenti e migliorare l’ambiente di lavoro.

La sostituzione dei sistemi di cottura tradizionali porterà nel Paese numerosi benefici, sia a livello sociale che ambientale. In particolare, è importante evidenziare l’impatto sul local content. I fornelli, infatti, sono interamente prodotti in loco in un laboratorio situato nella città di Abidjan, riconosciuto dalla Clean Cooking Alliance1, consentendo così di sostenere attivamente le aziende e la manodopera della Costa d’Avorio. Inoltre, il progetto impiega più di 40 risorse locali per la sua implementazione.
