Andrea and the uniqueness of self-awareness

What is it that makes us truly unique and allows us to make a difference in the lives of others?

Being yourself, trusting in your own potential in order to bring value and inspiration to others, both professionally and personally.

Andrea Di Chiara, Head of Consolidated Financial Planning and Control at Eni, knows this well, and that’s why every day he values his unique characteristic: self-awareness.

Andrea has worked at Eni since 2006. He lives in Milan with his partner and has always understood uniqueness as the result of experiences and emotions that create a completely original mix, allowing him to address the most complex challenges.

But how can self-awareness make a meaningful impact?

The importance of self-awareness

Self-awareness is being conscious of our own thoughts, emotions and perceptions. It is key to our ability to fully express our qualities and understand how these can contribute to the growth of those around us. Knowing ourselves allows us to face any challenge with greater confidence and authenticity, and to establish deeper relationships.

Being self-aware, however, is not as simple as it seems. And that’s why it’s a truly unique characteristic that can make a huge difference in people.

According to research conducted by the psychologist Tasha Eurich95% of people think they are self-aware, but in fact only 10-15% actually are.

This is because, to be aware of our inner self, we need to be present and attentive not only to what happens outside us, but above all to what happens inside us. But this is not so easy because, living in the digital age, we are constantly distracted by devices that demand our attention, such as smartphones, tablets and social media.

So, how can this uniqueness be put into practice?

For psychologists Shelley Duval and Robert Wicklund, self-awareness is closely linked to a form of self-evaluation based on our principles and values, and connected to self-control. The latter allows us to calmly observe our inner world, appreciating our characteristics and accepting those aspects of ourselves that we don’t always like.

Various tools can be used to enhance this quality. Meditation, for example, is a mindfulness practice that makes us more aware of our thoughts and emotions in the present moment. Journalling allows us to reflect on our experiences, ideas and actions, encouraging honest and continuous self-observation. Finally, practising listening to others not only improves our social skills, but also invites us to reflect on our responses and observe the way we relate.

ONE PIECE OF ADVICE: “Put yourself out there, especially in uncomfortable situations, accepting that you’re going to make mistakes, take risks and be judged. However, do it with a clear goal: to better understand who you are, in order to cultivate that self-awareness that gives us confidence in ourselves."

In terms of diversity & inclusion, learning to know ourselves and manage our own uniqueness allows us to appreciate and respect difference in others, recognising the value that each person brings. In a professional context, this means creating a workplace where everyone feels welcomed and is free to express their unique ideas and perspectives.

This capacity for introspection and openness to others not only fosters an inclusive environment, but also stimulates creativity and innovation. When individuals feel recognised and respected, they are more likely to collaborate, share ideas and contribute authentically, without fear of making mistakes or being judged.

Self-awareness, then, is a valuable uniqueness which, when cultivated, can bring forth qualities and talents that are often hidden. Our own and those of the people around us.

Diversity & Inclusion

Respect for the uniqueness of people contributes to the creation of an inclusive working environment, free from discrimination.
