In the city of Basra, Iraq, we work with the country’s authorities to strengthen specialist services within the local healthcare system, helping bring them into line with international standards and responding to the growing regional demand for healthcare. Our investments focus on enhancing oncology diagnostics and surgery, as well as paediatric haemato-oncology services, through the renovation and expansion of the Basra Children’s Cancer Hospital (BCCH), the construction of new infrastructure and the supply of highly specialised oncology medical equipment at the New Nuclear Medicine Ward (NNMW). We are also involved in training and professional development activities for doctors, surgeons and healthcare staff, both in Iraq and abroad, with the aim of strengthening professional skills and improving the quality of care.
In Iraq, we operate in the hydrocarbon exploration and development sector, particularly in the area of the Zubair field. To support local development, we carry out initiatives to promote health, and education, and to ensure greater access to energy and water in the region.

Community healthIn the Basra Governorate, where the Zubair field is located, we are engaged alongside the Directorate of Health to develop and strengthen specialist services within the local healthcare system, responding to the growing demand in the region. Thanks to our collaboration with Niguarda Hospital in Milan, the Basra Nuclear Medicine Unit has a nuclear medicine department featuring state-of-the-art equipment. This initiative is part of the construction of the Nuclear Diagnostic Centre in Basra project (NNMW project), entrusted to the Basrah Health Directorate (BHD) in 2024.
Through our collaboration with the Gaslini Paediatric Institute of Genoa, we also supported the completion and expansion of the Basra Children’s Cancer Hospital (BCCH), contributing to the construction of a new unit dedicated to paediatric haemato-oncology. The initiative has helped improve the facility’s diagnostic and therapeutic capabilities, bringing them into line with international standards.
In 2024, technical support was also provided to Um Qasr Hospital through the delivery of medical devices.
In the Basra health district, we also support training and skills development activities for doctors, nurses, healthcare technicians and paramedics through training, coaching and mentoring programmes delivered in collaboration with national and international hospital partners. The programmes include both in-person and remote training sessions, in Iraq and abroad, with the aim of strengthening professional skills, promoting knowledge exchange and contributing to an overall improvement in the quality of healthcare in the region.
