Our activities in Egypt

Group of people in the lab

In Egypt, we are active in the development and production of hydrocarbons and the implementation of gas projects. We also operate in the refining and marketing of crude oil products. We participate in the Damietta natural gas liquefaction plant. We contribute to the growth and decarbonization of the country's energy sector. We are evaluating circular economy projects, collaborations in the field of technology to reduce emissions and feasibility studies to start hydrogen production in the country. We have launched several local development initiatives in the country, also through the Eni Foundation.

How we operate in the country

Egyptian gas from Zohr and Nooros to secure energy supply

In Egypt we are involved in hydrocarbon production with the Zohr, Nooros, Baltim W and Meleiha projects. We are consolidating our presence in the Mediterranean region also with the Damietta gas liquefaction plant, where we operate in the liquefied natural gas (LNG) sector. We promote the export of gas to secure Europe and Italy's energy supply.

New technologies for decarbonization are being explored

In agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Holding Company (EEHC) and the Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company (EGAS), the technical and commercial feasibility of projects for the production of green hydrogen by using electricity generated from renewable sources and blue hydrogen by storing CO2 in depleted natural gas fields is being assessed. These activities we have started in Egypt change the way we produce and consume energy and further support our progress towards decarbonization.

The impact on local communities and the environment

Our activities in Egypt aim to have a positive impact on communities. Social responsibility initiatives are currently in progress. They include socio-economic, educational and health support programmes, also thanks to the contribution of the Eni Foundation. Among the most noteworthy projects is the work we carried out to reduce water leakage at the Abu Madi site, which resulted in a significant decrease in the withdrawal of fresh water supplied by third parties.  The activities to promote local development launched in the city of Port Said are running in parallel with economic diversification projects for communities living in the South Sinai and Matrouh areas.

New gas discovery announced offshore Egypt

The Nargis-1 well is located in the Nargis Offshore Area concession in the eastern Mediterranean Sea and will be developed by exploiting its proximity to our other existing infrastructure.

Egyptian gas production and supply increase

The agreement aims to promote Egyptian gas exports to Europe and Italy and will make it possible to maximise gas production and LNG exports.

Agreement signed for hydrogen production in Egypt

Eni signed an agreement with Egyptian Electricity Holding Company and Egyptian Natural Gas Holding Company to assess the technical and commercial feasibility of projects to produce hydrogen.
