The Sannazzaro de' Burgondi refinery in the province of Pavia, is one of the most advanced plants with the largest conversion capacity in Europe. Progressive technological investments have meant that it can currently offer a wide range of quality fuels, thus guaranteeing high standards of environmental protection and commitment to sustainability. Following the Final Investment Decision (FID) and the €500 million financing agreement signed with the European Investment Bank (EIB), the plan to convert specific refinery units into a biorefinery for Enilive biofuel production is moving forward.
Country: Italy
Activity start date: 1963 – present
The Sannazzaro refinery is located in the centre of the Turin-Milan-Genoa industrial triangle, along the route of the oil pipeline that connects the Genoa terminal with French-speaking Switzerland. With such an appropriately chosen favourable location, it has led to the development of an efficient supply and distribution network via oil pipelines, enabling more efficient product handling and a drastic reduction in the need for land transportation. With the partial conversion of the refinery, scheduled for completion by 2028, the new facility for the production of HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) diesel and SAF (Sustainable Aviation Fuel) will introduce new output derived from renewable feedstocks, without altering the production capacity for traditional fuels. This represents a significant milestone in the development of Enilive's biofuel production capacity. Over the years, the Sannazzaro refinery has been gradually upgraded to transform heavier products into hydrogenated products with less of an environmental impact. The main technological improvements that we have made are:
