Economic diversification in Mozambique

In Mozambique, we are involved in exploration, development, and production of natural gas. Through the initiatives connected with the Coral South project, we help small and medium-sized Mozambican enterprises grow, strengthen the economy and improve the quality of products and services on the local market. We work to enhance food security, develop agricultural and fisheries value chains, build social cohesion and improve resilience to conflict and climate change impacts. We have held a series of workshops to guide Mozambican SMEs through our procurement processes, tender applications, registration channels and business opportunities. In line with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, economic diversification is a key focus wherever we operate. Promoting entrepreneurship over the long term creates new job opportunities for people and communities.

Project actions and objectives

Strenghthening economic diversification in Mozambique

As part of our effort to increase local companies’ participation in our tenders, we have streamlined technical criteria in public calls, enabling tenders to proceed and significantly increasing the number of registered Mozambican companies. We also encourage the growth of entrepreneurship, agriculture, fisheries and services, fostering social cohesion, new jobs, the empowerment of women and young people, and economic growth. Since 2021, projects in Cabo Delgado have supported economic diversification through the triple nexus of humanitarian relief, development and peace, as well as resilience to climate change. In the Manica province, our 2022 partnership with the National Cooperative Business Association CLUSA International (NCBA CLUSA) launched a food security programme that develops new agriculture-based value chains. The aim is to raise farmers’ incomes through Climate-Smart Agriculture (CSA) practices while widening market access for small producers.
