Our activities in the Republic of Congo

We operate in the Republic of Congo primarily in the natural gas sector, with activities including production, liquefaction, export and local development. Through the Marine XII upstream asset, we develop offshore fields and integrate them with local facilities and power plants to support access to energy in the country, including gas supply to the Congo Power Plant, which makes a significant contribution to national electricity generation.

The Congo LNG project uses gas from Marine XII  for international markets: Phase 1 started up with Tango FLNG, while Phase 2 brought Nguya FLNG on stream ahead of schedule, increasing production capacity. These initiatives are part of Eni’s strategy to strengthen energy security and decarbonize its portfolio, leveraging gas as a transition fuel. In addition, we inaugurated in Loudima the country’s first agri-hub for the industrial-scale extraction of vegetable oil, destined for Enilive’s biorefineries for the production of biofuels. Alongside our business activities, we promote initiatives aimed at sustainable development in the country, contributing to inclusive and shared growth.

Country profile

Activity start date: 1968 – present

How we operate in the country

The country is developing LNG production

Our exploration activities are focused on the conventional and deep offshore areas off the coast of Pointe-Noire and in the onshore area of Koilou. To develop and market the country’s gas resources, we have made major investments in two floating plants located offshore. As part of the Congo LNG project, the Tango floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit is in production and is joined by Nguya FLNG and the Scarabeo floating production unit (FPU). The increase in gas production will allow us to produce electricity for the domestic market and export liquefied natural gas to Europe.

New energy from castor beans

The first agri-hub established in the country by Eni is located in the Loudima district. The agricultural products sent to the hub are used to produce vegetable oil to be converted into biofuel in Enilive biorefineries. To support the mechanisation of the sector in the country, the project includes the supply of several agricultural machines, such as tractors and threshers. The programme has a significant impact on employment through the jobs created at the agri-hub and the positive impact on the local supply chain.

Other initiatives in Congo

We support local communities in strengthening their skills in agriculture and entrepreneurship with the Hinda Integrated Project. In partnership with the non-governmental organisation Femmes Énergies and the AVSI Foundation, we have developed a project for the distribution and local production of improved cookstoves to replace traditional biomass-based devices, with benefits for health and the environment. Other projects are also underway for access to drinking water, improved health services and primary education in several villages. We promote access to education with the Alpha Hinda project, as well as access to energy by upgrading electricity transport infrastructure. Thanks to the Yasika programme, an initiative promoted by Joule, Eni’s school for entrepreneurship dedicated to startups and young entrepreneurs, we foster the creation of innovative local businesses in the fields of environmental protection, sustainable agricultural production, and the development of technologies designed to minimise environmental impact. Finally, with the Eni Foundation, we have initiated two projects focused on disease care and prevention, with a special focus on vulnerable families.
