Type of activity
Oil & Gas
Located in the western part of Kazakhstan, Karachaganak is a large field producing oil, condensates and natural gas. Since it opened, production capacity has been steadily increased by the installation of new gas reinjection facilities in addition to the existing ones. Activities progressed with the installation of a sixth compression unit, last development phase, with start-up expected in 2026.
Like our other activities in Kazakhstan, our commitment to supporting local communities continues with interventions in the areas of training, infrastructure and services.
Country: Kazakhstan
Activity start date: 1992 - present
This field produces liquids from the deeper layers of the reservoir. The gas is delivered (about 45%) and the remaining gas volumes are utilized for re-injection in the higher layers of the reservoir and as fuel gas. Almost the entire liquid production is stabilized at the Karachaganak Processing Complex (KPC) and exported to Western markets through the Caspian Pipeline Consortium (Eni’s interest 2%) and the Atyrau-Samara pipeline, this latter also a new route opened in 2023 leading to Germany.
Furthermore, together with the Karachaganak Petroleum Operating (KPO) consortium, we support the transition to the concept of a green office, which includes environmental performance monitoring and environmental training for company employees. Thanks to this project, KPO was announced among the winners of the third Republican Green Office Contest, which evaluated proposals for environmental protection from over 100 organisations. The most recent local development initiatives have included the construction and inauguration of a center for the collection and processing of agricultural products in Aksai, the development of a project aimed at preventing and mitigating the effects of natural disasters, and several technical training programs.
