HPC6

Eni’s new supercomputer

Scroll down

Technological advancements allow us to use energy more efficiently promoting the development of new energy solutions. We have integrated supercomputing throughout our entire business chain, transforming it into one of the levers for achieving Net Zero by 2050.

Claudio Descalzi, Chief Executive Officer of Eni

The challenges and potential of HPC6

HPC6 is the most powerful supercomputer in Europe and the fifth in the world. It allows us to further increase our computing capability by using a highly energy-efficient system.

Current uses

At the heart of Eni's decarbonization strategy

Eni's supercomputer operates along our businesses' entire supply chain with the goal of contributing to achieve Net Zero by 2050.

  • Leadership in geosciences

Its computing power supports algorithms used for three-dimensional subsoil imaging, based on data acquired from the surface, as well as for computational fluid dynamics (CFD).

  • Development of CO₂ storage technologies

By analysing the interactions between CO₂ and rock systems, we strengthen our expertise in re-using depleted reservoirs as storage sites.

  • Competitive advantage

Our HPC systems support applications ranging from scientific research to energy production from new sources, to AI.

Challenges

HPC6, the supercomputer driving the energy transition

A technological lever to accelerate Eni’s transformation and support the development of new high-potential businesses.

  • Development of innovative materials

Increasingly in demand in areas such as more sustainable chemistry and to reach reduction goals for carbon impact.

  • Magnetic confinement fusion

Plasma behaviour’s simulations to improve fusion efficiency and stability while advancing research into innovative materials.

  • Atmospheric simulations

To mitigate weather impacts on Eni’s infrastructure and to effectively design and manage wind and solar plants.
