We have been present in Angola since 1980, and today we operate through the joint venture Azule Energy, the country's largest independent hydrocarbon producer, with the aim of achieving greater operational efficiency in exploration, development and production. With Azule Energy, we are also present in the liquefied natural gas sector and in solar energy production, which also contributes to job creation. The Soyo gas processing plant of the New Gas Consortium is the country’s first non-associated gas development, aimed at reducing flaring and emissions, helping to position Angola in its role as a strategic player in the global natural gas market.
Together with Angola we are taking steps towards an fair energy transition. We contribute to guaranteeing the security of energy supplies and we share resources and technologies with the country. We leave the people with a good part of the energy we produce together, thus expanding the access to energy. We contribute to socio-economic development, with diversified initiatives in the fields of medicine, agricultural education, vocational training and entrepreneurship.
Activity start date: 1980 - present
Through the joint venture created with British Petroleum (BP), activities in the area focus on the development of hydrocarbon resources, with the East Hub & West Hub projects. The 25 MW Caraculo plant, the country's first photovoltaic power station, is in operation in the south-central part of Angola. The project contributes to the reduction of diesel consumption for electricity generation, supporting the diversification of energy in Angola. In terms of environmental benefits, the Caraculo photovoltaic plant will be able to avoid 50 KtCO2eq of climate-altering emissions per year. A study is being conducted with the National Oil and Gas Agency (ANPG) and Sonangol on the cultivation of castor beans, on degraded land which is not in competition with the food sector, for the production of biofuels. The Soyo gas processing plant, a strategic infrastructure for enhancing local resources, will contribute to reducing emissions and improving the use of associated gas, strengthening Eni’s commitment to more sustainable growth in the country.
We have launched various initiatives for promoting schooling, providing school materials and encouraging pupils to read. We support the project promoted by HALO Trust which trains teams of female miners to clear land of unexploded devices, creating new job opportunities among the female population. We have installed solar systems and implemented sanitary and vaccination campaigns also through Eni Foundation. A Clean Cooking programme launched to support families living in rural and suburban areas provides access to safer and more sustainable cooking solutions.
An overview of the activities that have strengthened our presence in the country since 1980.
Gas is sourced from the offshore Quiluma and Maboqueiro fields, treated and then supplied to the Angola LNG plant for export and domestic consumption.
The first 25 MW photovoltaic plant has come into operation, while the second is under development.
The independent joint venture brings together Eni and bp’s Angolan businesses and is now Angola’s largest independent oil and gas producer.
The foundation stone is laid for the Caraculo photovoltaic project, developed by Solenova, the joint venture between Eni and Sonangol.
Start-up of the oil field in Block 15/06 takes place just nine months after its discovery.
Eni makes a new oil discovery in the Afoxé exploration prospect in Block 15/06.
Eni started production from the East Hub five months ahead of the development plan, achieving one of the best time-to-market performances in the sector.
The Armada Olombendo floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit will operate in Block 15/06 as part of the East Hub Development Project.
Eni starts production from the West Hub Development Project in Block 15/06 using the N’Goma FPSO vessel.
Ochigufu is the tenth commercial oil discovery made in Block 15/06.
The subsequent mooring and hook-up operations will be a key step towards achieving first oil for the West Hub Development Project.
Eni makes its ninth oil discovery in Block 15/06, increasing the resource base that will be developed in the West Hub project.
The 50/50 joint venture between Eni and BP brings together exploration, liquefied natural gas and renewables activities in Angola.
