From computers to teaching materials, chairs to sports equipment. In Pemba, the capital of Cabo Delgado province along the northeastern coast of Mozambique, we support several learning projects to improve the education system. Beneficiaries include elementary school students in Paquitequete, Kupurata and Kumilamba, and adult literacy course recipients.
Mozambique is one of the most promising countries on the African continent, where we operate in the exploration sector with the goal of diversifying the energy mix, enhancing the value of natural gas. In particular, thanks to the Coral South project, the country is at the forefront of the international arena for gas production and export to neighboring countries and to Europe. In addition to contributing to the economic growth of the areas covered by this substantial investment, we also foster initiatives for local development to improve access to education, technical training and food safety.
Our initiatives in Pemba aim to ensure that all children in the targeted communities receive a fair, free and high quality primary education. To this end, more than 4,000 children are provided with school supplies, improved sanitary facilities and new equipment in their schools.
Through the Aprendemos brincando program, we offer a state-of-the-art teaching system and facilitators to work alongside teachers. Thanks to these new supporting figures, this approach to schooling generates a rapport of dialogue and discussion with the students that stimulates each individual’s curiosity.
Our access to education activities have resulted in a 2% reduction in the dropout rate, with 96% of students completing the school year. In addition, the modernisation of the schools in Kupurata and Kumilamba, handed over to Pemba municipality in partnership with Eni Rovuma Basin, was also followed by a series of awareness-raising initiatives on issues such as road safety, civic education and child protection.
Also, the Integrated Education Project in the community of Paquitequete (2021-2024) aims to ensure equitable and quality access to primary education. This project guarantees the provision of meals for primary and pre-school children, as well as the supply of educational materials and additional equipment for schools in Paquitequete, Kuparata and Kamilamba.
Infrastructure, human capital and nutrition are the pillars of the Paquitequete school project in the Municipality of Pemba, Mozambique. "Education is a catalyst for socioeconomic development and one of the keys to fighting poverty," explains Sérgio Campião, director of Local Sustainable Development at Eni.

Alongside the programmes for the youngest children, we carry out initiatives to support the training of young people in Pemba and Cabo Delgado and to help them enter the job market.
Indeed, the Pemba Commercial Institute Project (IICP) provides students with a workshop for practical lessons on electricity, access to scholarships, and training and certification for teachers and managers of the IICP itself. This is also supported by extracurricular activities in the areas of poetry, horticulture and drama involving teachers and administrative staff. In 2023, pedagogical training was provided for teachers and educators, as well as training for school principals. In addition, four school councils and two kindergartens were established in partnership with ADPP.
