Our activities in Australia

Solar panels on Australian soil surrounded by green nature

Activities in Australia focus on the exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons and natural gas, and the renewable energy market. The Katherine photovoltaic plant, located in the Northern Territory, contributes to meeting the federal state’s target of producing 50% of energy from renewable sources by 2030. The solar farm also helps eliminate around 63,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year. Through the subsidiary Eni Australia Limited, we have also acquired two projects to build two solar photovoltaic power plants in Batchelor and Manton Dam.

In the country we promote initiatives for the development of the territory, the enhancement of indigenous cultures, and the safeguard of biodiversity. In Asia and Oceania, we produce natural gas for our host countries and market liquefied natural gas (LNG). We promote low carbon technologies and the circularity of industrial processes. We are committed to developing photovoltaic plants projects and exploring solutions for carbon capture, storage and utilisation (CCUS).

How we operate in the country

Emerging new energies and natural gas

Located in the Northern Territory, Katherine solar farm, developed with the goal of optimising and innovating processes, is the biggest plant in Australia. It has an installed capacity of 34 MW and is equipped with a battery energy storage system with capacity of 6 MW. The electricity generated is fed into the local grid, contributing to the local government’s decarbonisation target.

The gas extracted from the Blacktip field, located in the Bonaparte Basin, is processed by the nearby Yelcherr plant and supplies a state-owned power station benefiting local communities. The Bayu-Undan gas and liquids field, located between Australia and East Timor, and the Darwin LNG liquefaction plant enable us to further consolidate our energy source diversification strategy in the country. Additional collaboration  opportunities are also being evaluated in the field for the capture, storage and reuse of CO2 , as well as in the development of new exploration projects.

The Caring for Country project is currently operating in the region, to preserve indigenous cultural heritage and protecting both underwater and terrestrial biodiversity. The initiative involves indigenous peoples in environmental monitoring activities and the management of flora and fauna.
