The PRORES project in Mozambique

Detail of a person's hands, under water

In Cabo Delgado, via the Pro Resilience (PRORES) project, we are dedicated to protecting the land, fostering economic diversification, and contributing to equitable access to drinking water, improving sanitation practices and services, and enhancing the quality of educational services in the Mecúfi district. We bolster the resilience of local communities against the effects of climate change by: raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity and environmental conservation, which encompasses the rehabilitation of mangrove ecosystems, and endorsing sustainable economic practices like beekeeping and aquaculture. We also advocate for improved sanitation access, particularly in rural schools, and strive for equitable provision of safe drinking water, aiming to expand the coverage of water supply for communities. In Mozambique, we are active in the exploration sector, as well as in the development and production of liquefied natural gas. Coral South This has enabled the country to join the global LNG market, encouraging job creation, energy stability, and the diversification of supply sources. Through our partnership with the local community, we are also working hard to create innovative and unique models for the energy transition in the areas of agro-energy, forestry, and clean cooking.

Project actions and objectives

Within the framework of the Pro Resilience (PRORES) project, we support a range of activities for local communities in the Mecúfi district, in partnership with Lúrio University. This is part of the sustainability plan for the Coral South FLNG (Floating Liquefied Natural Gas) project. Specifically, our activities concentrate on three primary areas of intervention.

Biodiversity and protection of the environment

We advocate for more sustainable practices to safeguard biodiversity, enhancing awareness of its importance for communities and environmental conservation. To achieve this, we support the regeneration of mangroves by adopting a community-based approach, facilitated by providing training and equipment. The initiative enables communities to rehabilitate hectares of vegetation, yielding concrete benefits for coastal defence, flood mitigation, and the preservation of ecosystems.

Sustainable agriculture

We develop agricultural activities to support the creation and enhancement of the abilities of individuals and their organisations to establish and manage income-generating economic activities. We involve farmers and local communities in the rehabilitation of degraded areas through beekeeping, mussel cultivation, gardening, and aquaculture activities. Through training, we offer support and expertise in agricultural techniques, managerial skills, and commercial strategies. At the same time, supplying machinery, materials and equipment supports the initiation or expansion of economic activities.

Access to water and sanitation

We carry out initiatives to expand access to clean drinking water, enhancing the provision of water supply services for rural communities. To achieve this, new water and sanitation facilities were constructed, and existing infrastructure, including community drinking water wells and primary school toilets, was refurbished. We have also conducted awareness-raising campaigns focusing on more sustainable water usage, the maintenance and management of the provided infrastructure, and the best hygiene and sanitation practices.
