Our work to protect the area and the ecosystems.
At our operating sites, we pay special attention to protecting water resources, minimising emissions and oil spills and managing waste, while also safeguarding protected areas that are important for biodiversity and services in the ecosystem. We are committed to enhancing and protecting the local natural heritage, through projects that preserve and rehabilitate ecosystems.
We carry out prevention work and manage all aspects related to oil spill impacts. We also apply the best procedural standards to control major air pollutants and implement environmental remediation practices.
We apply the Best Available Techniques (BAT) and the highest procedural standards to reduce emissions and control the main atmospheric pollutants. In 2025, emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere showed a downward trend. We are committed to reducing our direct GHG emissions and were among the first in the sector to set a series of targets designed to improve our performance across our various assets, using specific indicators to track the progress made.
Protecting the territories in which we operate is an absolute priority for Eni, in line with our corporate mission’s objective to preserve our planet. Over the years, we have developed increasingly effective and sustainable environmental remediation techniques and practices to utilise land, water and waste, whether it be industrial or from remediation. The Eni company that oversees this area is Eni Rewind, which, among other things, in cooperation with its stakeholders and thanks to a network of partnerships with research institutions and universities supports innovation through the testing and the implementation of new remediation technologies.
These are some of the main activities:
We carry out activities aimed at prevention, preparedness and, where necessary, the response to the risk of accidental spills of crude oil and petroleum products, both onshore and offshore, including the mitigation of any resulting effects and the restoration of the original environmental conditions. In 2025, the volumes of operational oil spills fell by 68% compared to 2024, alongside a drop in the number of incidents. Furthermore, no oil spills resulting from acts of sabotage have been recorded, partly due to the divestment of assets in Nigeria, where such incidents have historically been concentrated.
As part of our prevention measures, the remote e-vpms® (Eni Vibroacustic Pipeline Monitoring System), which is subject to regular technological upgrades, partly to detect interference from third parties and prevent breaches, is in place across Italy on all sections of oil pipelines that are most vulnerable to breaches caused by third-party damage or ground movements. In 2025, it was also installed in the Ivory Coast on a section of an offshore field. As part of its ongoing efforts to identify potential leaks, Eni is investing in its proprietary e-siam® (Eni Structural Integrity Acoustic Monitoring) technology, to detect and locate corrosion and leaks in tanks and pipelines through regular inspections and tests. With regard to mitigation, the methodology for assessing risks arising from natural events has been standardised. In the upstream sector, we carry out inspections, monitoring and replacement of onshore and offshore pipelines to ensure the integrity of our assets and prevent any leaks.
We also work with industry groups, such as Ipieca (the global oil and gas association dedicated to improving environmental and social performance across the energy transition) and the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP), to boost our ability to tackle sea pollution caused by spills of oil and other chemicals. Lastly, we update and disseminate a number of good practice guides, take part in regional events with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and the Global Initiative West, Central and Southern Africa, and monitor the work of the Oil Spill Preparedness Regional Initiative for the Caspian Sea, Black Sea, and Central Eurasia.
We specifically support a socially just energy transition, aiming to preserve the environment and biodiversity and promote access to energy resources in an efficient and sustainable manner for everyone.
