Our activities in Argentina focus on the exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons. The Argentina LNG project, currently pending the Final Investment Decision, will help to unlock the value of the country’s natural gas resources by implementing an integrated system for the production, treatment, transportation and liquefaction of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG), thus strengthening Argentina’s position in the global energy market. With Argentina LNG, the country will position itself as a new LNG exporter, reinforcing its role in the international energy landscape.
The initiative, which will enable resources from the onshore Vaca Muerta field to be fully harnessed, aligns with Eni’s strategy to promote the energy transition, increase security of supply and contribute to decarbonisation. Through Argentina LNG, we leverage a global track record built up over decades in gas exploration and production and in the execution of complex Floating LNG projects, with strong capabilities developed in the Republic of the Congo and Mozambique.
Start of operations: 1991 - ongoing
The Argentina LNG project will support the production and export of Argentina’s natural gas and includes the treatment, transportation and liquefaction of gas produced from the unconventional onshore Vaca Muerta field by the Argentine company YPF. It also includes the production and export of associated liquids. Liquefaction will take place offshore using two Floating LNG (FLNG) units, an innovative technology in which Eni plays a leading role. This solution helps shorten delivery timelines while ensuring high standards of efficiency and safety. We also participate, through a consortium, in the exploration licence for block MLO 124, located in the Malvinas Basin in Argentina’s southern offshore.
