The Integrated Hinda Project in the Republic of Congo

motorized plow operation demonstration in front of the community

We are present in the Republic of the Congo in exploration, development and production, both onshore and offshore, in power generation and in initiatives that will integrate the country into the LNG market, the chemical sector and agri- business. With first LNG production in February 2024 and the start-up of delivery to international markets, we are pursuing energy-security targets within our decarbonisation strategy. An agreement has also been signed with Société Nationale des Pétroles du Congo (SNPC) to supply gas to the domestic market.

Further agreements have set in motion initiatives for local communities to support access to education and vocational training in the country (Pointe-Noire and Ollombo), and activities for the local fishing sector.  A new agreement has launched Phase 3 of the Hinda Integrated Project (PIH 3). The project started in 2011 to foster development in the Kouilou area and involves the population of rural centres near the M’Boundi field in the Hinda district, in western Congo. Through this initiative we back socio-economic development, education, economic diversification, access to water and sanitation, health services and micro-entrepreneurship. Our community work also focuses on fair, sustainable energy access with the construction of the Djéno (CED) and Congo (CEC) power plants.

Actions and objectives of the project

A diverse project that supports communities

The Hinda project involves communities living near the M’Boundi field in the Republic of the Congo and targets four priority areas: education, health, access to water and agriculture. It engages residents in health-protection, environmental awareness and parenting education campaigns, while routine tasks such as maintaining the water wells that secure supplies are entrusted to local committees. The Conseil Départemental du Kouilou is stepping in as a partner for rural development, helping to support the population and safeguard the project’s long-term sustainability.

The CATREP training centre for technical skills enhancement

The Hinda Integrated Project carries out extensive infrastructure work to build and upgrade existing facilities, for example schools, medical centres and water wells. It also includes the CATREP (Centre d’Appui Technique et des Ressources Professionnelles), a training hub that supports farmers and livestock breeders. Regular courses at the centre strengthen professional skills, for example by teaching agronomic techniques to grow crops for biofuel production.

Alpha Hinda, the project that ensures access to education and improves quality of life

The Alpha Hinda project focuses on promoting literacy. With teachers and volunteers on board, its training centres give children and adults access to high-quality study programmes. Parallel initiatives are underway for the cultivation and sale of vegetable crops, with proceeds going to the student volunteers involved; over time, the students will be organised into a cooperative with its own bank account to manage finances.

Circularity in waste management

There are circular economy initiatives ongoing in the region to create value from waste, through the biodegradation of contaminated soil and oil-based cuttings, composting of waste from company canteens to be reused as fertiliser, and plans for the recovery and recycling of plastics.
