Our activities in the United States

Tank system near the lake

We are active in the exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons, particularly natural gas and LNG, refining and chemicals in several US states. At the same time, we are expanding our activities in biorefining through our new company Enilive and we are consolidating our presence in the renewables sector with Plenitude. We are also pursuing a strategic collaboration with Commonwealth Fusion Systems in magnetic confinement fusion research, in addition to our long-standing partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston.

North America is a strategic territory for the energy industry, not only in terms of traditional resources - the sector has historical roots here - but increasingly also for renewable sources. Besides playing a leading role in global energy production and consumption, the United States is a key hub of scientific and technological innovation, thanks to a network of top research centres and a system of companies and start-ups that are among the most dynamic in the world. Since February 2023 Eni is no longer involved in any unconventional activity.

How we operate in the country

More sustainable energy and biofuels

In the USA we operate in the field of biorefining and renewable energy through a series of collaborations. The St. Bernard biorefinery in Louisiana, the result of a strategic agreement between Enilive and PBF Energy, aims to process around 1.1 million tonnes per year of low-carbon raw materials to produce HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) quality biofuel using the Ecofining technology.

In the field of renewables, with Plenitude we operate more than twenty wind and photovoltaic farms of our own, combined with battery storage sites. At the same time, we are developing and building new plants through a network of partnerships with companies in the sector. We have achieved a total installed capacity of almost 1 GW in the country. One of our leading production sites is Brazoria County, Texas, where we aim to produce between 400 and 500 GWh of solar energy per year.

An established and diversified presence

We have been present in the United States since 1968 and conduct our activities in 7 different states, historically operating in hydrocarbon exploration and production. In the Gulf of Mexico, we have holdings in 46 exploration blocks, as 100% operators in Allegheny, Appaloosa, Pegasus, Longhorn, Devils Tower and Triton. In Alaska, Eni has holdings in 28 blocks, with a 100% stake in Nikaitchuq and Oooguruk. At the same time, with Eni US, established in 1987 as American Agip, we produce and sell finished lubricants in North America both for traction and industrial use. Since February 2023, following the disposal of  the Alliance area (27.5%, not as an operator), in the Fort Worth basin, Eni is no longer involved in any unconventional activity.

A partnership for fusion research and development

Through Eni Next, our venture capital company, we are a strategic partner of Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) to accelerate the industrial application of magnetic confinement fusion. The CFS is a spin-out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, with which we have been collaborating since 2008, with over one hundred researchers, professors and PhD students involved in more than 70 projects to date together with Eni research.

A partnership for the St. Bernard biorefinery

The Louisiana-based facility is the result of a collaboration between Enilive and PBF Energy. Our goal is to produce 306 million gallons a year of HVO Diesel.

Plenitude acquires a photovoltaic plant in Texas

Eni’s assets in the state and in the rest of the US grow and reach an installed capacity of 878 MW in the local market.

An agreement to acquire wind and solar projects

The agreement reached by Falck Renewables and Eni US involves the management of the business of the company BEHUS, which includes 62 MW of wind and solar projects and a pipeline of wind projects up to

Production starts at the Hadrian South field

The area is located in the Gulf of Mexico at a depth of 2,300 metres. Daily output is expected to be 10 million m³ of gas and 2,250 barrels of liquid hydrocarbons.

Start of collaboration with MIT in Boston

The collaboration will result in several successful research programmes, leading to the registration of dozens of patents on low-carbon inventions and technologies.

Start of activities in the country

Eni began operations in the United States of America, particularly in hydrocarbon exploration and production.
