We operate across several US states in the exploration, development and production of hydrocarbons, particularly natural gas and LNG, as well as in refining and chemicals. At the same time, we are expanding our activities in bio-refining through Enilive, while consolidating our renewable energy footprint through Plenitude. In addition, we carry forward a strategic collaboration with Commonwealth Fusion Systems in magnetic confinement fusion research, alongside our long-standing partnership with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston.
North America is a strategic territory for the energy industry, not only in terms of traditional resources, a sector with deep historical roots here, but increasingly also for renewable sources. The United States is a key hub for scientific and technological innovation, thanks to a network of excellence in research centres and one of the world most dynamic ecosystems of companies and start-ups. Since February 2023, Eni is no longer involved in any unconventional activity.
Activity start date: 1968 - present
In the United States of America, we operate in the field of biorefining and renewable energy through a series of collaborations. The St. Bernard bio-refinery at Chalmette, in Louisiana, the result of a strategic agreement between Enilive and PBF Energy, aims to process around 1.1 million tonnes per year of low-carbon feedstocks to produce high quality HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil) biofuels using proprietary Ecofining technology.
In the renewables sector, through Plenitude, we operate over twenty company-owned wind and solar farms, combined with battery storage systems. At the same time, we are developing and building new facilities thanks to a network of partnerships with companies in the sector. One of our leading production sites is Brazoria County, Texas, where we target the production of 400 to 500 GWh of solar energy per year.
We have been present in the United States of America since 1968 and operate across different states, with a long history in hydrocarbon exploration and production. Eni holds interests in 39 exploration and development blocks in the conventional and deep offshore of the Gulf of Mexico, of which 16 are operated by Eni. Exploration and production activities are regulated by concessions. In 2025 production amounted to 22kboe/d net to Eni, mainly, coming from the Allegheny, Appaloosa, Pegasus, Longhorn, Devils Tower, Triton operated fields as well as the Europa, Medusa, Lucius, Frontrunner and Heidelberg non-operated fields. With regard to development activities, production optimisation work is currently ongoing for the Devil’s Tower, Lucius, and Europa fields.
Meanwhile, with Eni US, established in 1987 as American Agip, we produce and market finished lubricants in North America both for traction and industrial use. Since February 2023, following the disposal of the Alliance area (27.5%, non-operated) in the Fort Worth basin, Eni has no longer been involved in any unconventional activity.
Through Eni Next, our venture capital company, we are a strategic partner of Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) to accelerate the industrial application of magnetic confinement fusion. The CFS is a spin-out of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Boston, with which we have been collaborating since 2008, with over one hundred researchers, professors and PhD students involved in more than 70 projects to date together with Eni research.
