For the fourth year in a row Eni is a partner for special free openings of the exhibition Wunderkammer. Art, Nature, Wonderyesterday and today, at the Museo Poldi Pezzoli and Gallerie d’Italia – Piazza Scala in Milan. For the first time, the two institutions will merge into a single unit for this special exhibition.
The exhibition, which runs from, 15 November 2013 to 2 March 2014, examines the relationship between art, nature and wonder through the Wunderkammern, or “wonder rooms‘ phenomenon, which emerged in the late Renaissance period and the origins of which can be traced back to a number of private Italian museums that brought together “the world that is around us‘.
The Wunderkammern concept is identified with the origins of the modern museum and the notion of collecting as a “work in itself‘, a design of the collector. The Germanic and Italian areas are two poles in which the phenomenon of the Wunderkammern, which was also international in scope, was most fully realised. It was mainly Italian natural scientists and the ruling class, as well as Austrian, German and Bohemian princes, that put together collections in which science, natural philosophy and artistic creation were to find a balance of reciprocal interaction, mutual exchange and enhancement, and come to represent a unique and unrepeatable cultural and artistic phenomenon in European history.
The exhibition will also feature guided tours and teaching materials for schools. The highly moving layout of the show will also include a video outlining the technical background to the project.
