Collaboration agreements with universities and research institutes are of strategic importance and give us considerable strength to accelerate the transition to increasingly sustainable energy. We have already taken important steps in this ambitious and concrete process, but we need to create a national and global system of research excellence to promote a culture of circularity and Carbon Neutrality, combining investment opportunities and know-how. These collaborations in the field of innovation lay the foundations for overcoming the challenges facing companies and civil society by developing technologies for the future of energy.

Research and innovation, our growth pillars
Technological research allows us to consolidate and improve our skills in order to develop innovative projects covering all aspects of the production chain along the following strategic guidelines:
- Operational Excellence to research technologies for asset development, increasing energy efficiency, ensuring the highest level of safety and minimal environmental impact;
- Carbon Neutrality to reduce, capture, transform or store CO₂, promoting natural gas as an energy source in the transition to a low-carbon energy mix, integrating it with renewable energies and developing innovative energy technologies;
- Circular economy to reduce the use of raw materials by transforming waste into products with added value, including through recycling.
We continue to strengthen our network of collaborations with leading national and international scientific institutions. The fight against climate change and technological research require continual synergy with the world's best universities and research institutes.

Eni and MIT in Boston
The strategic collaboration between Eni and MIT began in 2008 and resulted in unique technologies in the field of sustainability.
The projects

CINECA
In November 2020, Cineca's HPC5 and Marconi 100 supercomputers were involved in the most complex molecular supercomputing experiment ever conducted to identify drugs to fight COVID-19.

CNR
Water, agriculture, the Arctic, fusion: we work with CNR in Metaponto, Portici, Lecce and Gela on research projects concerning decarbonization and solutions to mitigate the impacts of drought in the Mediterranean and other strategic geographical area

ENEA
A strategic alliance for the sustainable, safe and inexhaustible energy of the future, to create a large scientific and technological centre for DTT (Divertor Tokamak Test) fusion, a project worth over 600 million euros and providing 1,500 new jobs.

Politecnico di Milano
The collaboration started in 2008: the circular economy, carbon neutrality and the monitoring systems used in Asset Integrity Management are some of the areas we work on, resulting in innovative solutions in various fields.

University of Pisa
Eni strengthens partnership with University of Pisa: the agreement consolidates joint research on key areas related to the energy transition, such as biofuels and aerial and submarine robotics.

University of Naples Federico II
A collaboration agreement on research and development topics in the world of energy, the circular economy and Industry 4.0, including the development of technologies for industrial automation, advanced robotics and Big Data & Analytics.

Università of Padua
The collaboration focuses on topics related to the energy transition, digital transformation and the circular economy, with the aim of identifying new strategic lines of research for sustainable development and decarbonization.
