- SUSTAINABILITY
Luanda, 27th of February, 2019 - Eni Angola, representing Sonangol - Concessionaire and the partners of Block 15/06 - Sonangol P&P and SSI, signed a new donation contract with HALO Trust, today, in support of the demining activity in the country .
With this donation of funds to the HALO Trust’s “100 Women in Demining” project, which focuses on demining through inclusion and empowerment of women, Eni Angola intends to finance the demining of 45,000 m2 of land in Benguela province for a period of 12 months.
This is Eni Angola’s second donation to the HALO Trust. The first contract was signed in November 2017, to finance the project "100 Women in Demining" in the area of Kanenguerere, in the province of Benguela, for 12 months. During this period, 62 mines and 24 items of unexploded ordnance were found and destroyed by Eni-funded female deminers, whilst a total area of over 45,000 m2 was cleared. Eni funding also enabled the construction of the first purpose built school building in the area, providing an essential learning facility for local children.
Andrea Giaccardo, Managing Director of Eni Angola, commented that "For Eni Angola, and for the partners of the contractor group of Block 15/06, it is important to participate in the sustainable development of the country. We are proud to confirm our support to a project that contributes to safe access to land, which is a prerequisite for growth, while at the same time empowering women.”
Ralph Legg, HALO's Angola Programme Manager said: "This continued support from Eni Angola and partners will have a double impact. It will make the local people safer in Benguela province and it provides jobs, training and access to skills for the women who go into the minefields and make their country safer. HALO is very grateful for Eni's support. In the first year of support, as well as clearing land Eni's helped us build a new school for the isolated village of Kanenguerere."
