The promotion of schooling in Angola

Since 2016, three projects have been underway in the provinces of Luanda, Huila, Namibe and Cabinda aimed at improving education in Angola.

Our commitment to promoting education in Luanda

In 2016 we launched the first cycle of our project to teach children in state schools in Luanda to read, and it is still going. In recent years, under the three memoranda of understanding (MoUs) we signed with the Provincial Council of Education, we have provided over 8,500 school books to 25 schools, to be read by a total of 41,000 pupils.

We support integration in the Huila and Namibe provinces

In 2017, as part of an MoU signed between Eni Angola, the Ministry of Energy and Water and the Ministry of Health, we started an integrated social project that contributes to the improvement of the living conditions of nine communities affected by drought in the southern provinces of Huila and Namibe. As part of this project, we have installed solar and water systems to provide energy and water for communities, including schools and medical clinics. Another of the project’s aims is to encourage healthcare and farming, as well as a school programme involving more than 20 schools. We opened evening schools in 2019 and they have had about 170 students to date, thanks to the electricity provided by solar systems and now available in school buildings.

Renovation of the Beira Nova School in Cabinda

We started a social project in the northern province of Cabinda, where we became the operator of the onshore block at Cabinda North. This involved renovating the Beira Nova school, for which a MoU was signed in March 2019 between Eni Angola and the municipal council of Cacongo. Complete refurbishment and equipment of the school will mean quality education for around 300 pupils. The work was finished in 2020.

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is an action plan signed in September 2015 by 193 UN member states. It incorporates 17 goals aimed at the socio-economic development of communities and regions. In line with the fourth goal, we help provide equal, inclusive education to local communities, and quality learning opportunities for all (Goal 4).

Thanks to various initiatives launched in the provinces of Luanda, Huíla, Namibe and Cabinda, we have helped to raise literacy levels among local populations and increase the number of children enrolled in schools.

The solar power system we have installed has changed the life of the schooling community. We can now do what we couldn't in the past, like use computers and printers, have a canteen and a television.

Partnerships

The three projects were developed in collaboration of the Ministry of Energy and Water, the Ministry of Health, the Provincial Education Council of Luanda and the Administration of the Municipality of Cacongo.
