The journey of GNL: technology and global markets

Transported by sea, LNG becomes a flexible global energy source that integrates with the energy transition.

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a strategic resource to meet the growing global demand for accessible, secure and flexible energy. Eni operates in this sector by managing a modern fleet equipped with advanced technologies, consisting of four LNG carriers: GasLog Italy, Maran Gas Kastelorizo, Maran Gas Kalymnos and SeaPeak Galicia. Through its subsidiary LNG Shipping S.p.A., we optimise transportation efficiently, reaching key markets along global maritime routes.

Efficiency and flexibility along global routes

LNG is produced by cooling natural gas to very low temperatures (around -160°C) at near atmospheric pressure. This reduces its volume by approximately six hundred times compared to its gaseous state (NG). An LNG carrier can transport a significant amount of liquid gas (between 60,000 and 200,000 cubic metres depending on the vessel type) equivalent to around 36 to 120 million cubic metres of natural gas.

Once at its destination, the LNG is regasified, i.e. converted back to its gaseous form, and fed into the country’s pipeline network to supply homes, industries and power plants.

Unlike fixed international pipelines, LNG transported by ship connects exporting and importing countries via liquefaction and regasification terminals. Overall, LNG improves supply flexibility and market accessibility, both for sourcing and sales, thereby strengthening energy security.
