The journey of GNL: technology and global markets

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is a strategic resource to meet the growing global demand for accessible, secure and flexible energy. Eni operates in this sector by managing a modern fleet equipped with advanced technologies, consisting of four LNG carriers: GasLog Italy, Maran Gas Kastelorizo, Maran Gas Kalymnos and SeaPeak Galicia. Through its subsidiary LNG Shipping S.p.A., we optimise transportation efficiently, reaching key markets along global maritime routes.

Efficiency and flexibility along global routes

LNG is produced by cooling natural gas to extremely low temperatures (around –160 °C, TBD) until it condenses, then keeping it refrigerated (–130 °C, TBD) and pressurised (7 bar, TBD) to maintain its liquid state. This process reduces its volume by approximately 600 times. As a result, each vessel can transport a significantly larger amount of gas for the same cargo volume.

Once it reaches its destination, LNG is regasified – i.e. returned to its gaseous state - and fed into the distribution network to supply homes, industries and power plants.

Unlike pipelines, which require fixed infrastructure, LNG shipped by sea can reach areas not connected to the gas grid, improving market accessibility.
