Gela, March 20th, 2014 - Raffineria di Gela . has announced that it is setting up an internal investigation team to ascertain the causes, both direct and indirect, behind the incident on 15th March 2014. They will seek to identify the correct measures to implement in order to prevent the recurrence of such an event.
The fire, which developed in a confined section of the supporting structure and piping of the Isola 7 Nord area, was promptly contained and put out. The safety measures required to secure the area and the related pipes necessitated the shutdown of the relevant plant of Isola 7 Nord, due to a lack of power. At no stage of the incident did said plant run the risk of being involved in the event. The incident occurred away from the plant operating areas and was kept constantly under control.
Finally the hazard cannot be considered as major due to; the small amount of hydrocarbons released; the confinement of the affected area, which featured pipes only and no plant equipment; to the absence of injury to people; and finally, to the limited environmental impact of the incident, which had only modest material damages.
