Eni makes HPC6’s computational power available to accelerate technological research

Applications are open until August 7, 2025, for the "HPC Call4Innovators", which offers access to Eni’s advanced computational resources to support cutting-edge computing solutions to accelerate the journey towards technological innovation

San Donato Milanese (Milan) 11 June 2025 - Eni in collaboration with Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE), and the CINECA Consortium, with the support of Plug and Play, is launching the "HPC Call4Innovators" initiative, offering startups, SMEs, academic institutions, and research centers direct access to HPC6’s supercomputing resources. This initiative will allow participants to test their computational models and collaborate with the Eni’s experts. The goal is to significantly accelerate the development of decarbonisation technologies and promote innovative computational methodologies applied to the energy transition.

This HPC Call4Innovators is aimed at startups, scaleups, universities, research centers, innovative SMEs, mixed private/public laboratories, and freelancers. They are invited to propose an innovative simulation and modelling project in an HPC (High-Performance Computing) environment within five strategic thematic areas: computational materials science, meteorology and earth sciences, energy portfolio management, engineering systems, and smart mobility.

Through its Open Application platform, Plug and Play will facilitate the connection between Eni and excellences in high-performance computing applied to the energy sector. Applications received will then be evaluated by Eni, along with technological partners CINECA, HPE, AMD and, based on criteria which include the solidity of the proposal, novelty of the solution, compatibility with the HPC6 infrastructure, alignment with Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and Eni's strategic plan. Selected initiatives will benefit from access to a world-class technological infrastructure like HPC6 and Eni's network of specialised expertise. This opportunity will also help to optimise the timing and costs, allow for experimenting with solutions in an advanced industrial computing environment, and accelerate market access and growth.

Lorenzo Fiorillo, Director of Technology, R&D and Digital of Eni said: “Innovation and the continuous improvement of technologies are fundamental not only for maintaining and strengthening Eni's leadership in the energy transition but also for fostering the growth of computational methodologies for decarbonisation. Through this initiative, Eni leverages the significant computing power available sharing its technological and programming skills to promote projects that generate an impact on the energy transition and technological competitiveness with an innovative approach.

Alessandra Poggiani, Director General of CINECA, commented: “For many years, CINECA has partnered with Eni in managing one of the world's most powerful supercomputing systems. With the guidance and critical support of the Italian Ministry of University and Research, CINECA has cultivated a unique expertise in operating high-impact High-Performance Computing (HPC) infrastructures. We are thrilled to support Call4Innovators, a project that enhances collaboration and strengthens the ties between scientific research and industry. This initiative is crucial in an evolving context where the speed of technological development must be combined with sustainability needs.”

Claudio Bassoli, President and Managing Director, Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) Italy said: "HPE is proud to partnering with Eni as the technology partner for Call4Innovators, an important initiative that opens new paths of collaboration and puts the HPC6 computational power at the service of those who are building the future. Furthermore, systems like HPC6 represent a fundamental component for research and innovation in the context of High Performance Computing. HPC6 is not just a technological milestone but also a catalyst and accelerator for scientific, industrial, and social innovation. We are excited to welcome a new generation of innovators that will be able to take part to the great challenges of our time."

Travis Karr, Corporate Vice President, Business Development, Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) said: "We are proud to deepen our strategic partnership with Eni, expanding our joint technology development to drive global innovation. Through Call4Innovators, we are committed to empowering startups and researchers by providing access to cutting-edge HPC and AI tools, accelerating the development of transformative, sustainable solutions for a brighter future."

Tommaso Maschera, Director Plug and Play Italy said: "We are proud to support Eni in identifying the most promising projects capable of driving innovation in the energy sector in service of sustainability and the growth of our country. The selected startups will have the opportunity to test, validate, and optimize their computational models in a high-performance environment powered by one of the most powerful supercomputers in the world, significantly reducing development time and maximizing the impact of their solutions. This initiative serves as a concrete bridge between talent and technology, offering a unique opportunity for innovators and promoting the adoption of strategic technologies for the energy transition".
