The Green River Project, farming entrepreneurship in Nigeria

In September 2023 Eni announces the signing of an agreement with Oando PLC for the sale of Nigerian Agip Oil Company Ltd (NAOC Ltd), the wholly Eni-owned subsidiary focusing on onshore oil & gas exploration and production in Nigeria, as well as power generation. Following the transaction completion with Oando PLC, Eni will maintain its presence in Nigeria through Nigerian Agip Exploration (NAE) and Agip Energy and Natural Resources (AENR). It continues to operate in the country focusing on operated offshore activities. Participations in operated-by-others assets, both onshore and offshore, and Nigeria LNG will remain in Eni portfolio too.

The Green River Project (GRP) is a micro-credit initiative that was set up with the aim of improving the quality of life of communities in the Delta, Imo, Rivers and Bayelsa States. The GRP aims to ensure food safety and sustainable entrepreneurship by involving local farmers and developing the potential of women and young people.

In Nigeria, we work together with the NAOC joint venture to facilitate access to energy for local communities, promoting initiatives that favour economic diversification and the valorisation of gas produced in the area.

Project actions and objectives

Agricultural development in Nigeria

Thanks to partnerships with international research institutes, the aim from the outset is to develop projects in areas covered by our concessions. Through the feasibility studies of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), we have been aiming to raise awareness of opportunities in the agricultural sector since the late 1990s. To do this, the Green River Project, launched with the NAOC joint venture, promotes programmes that foster employment, launches cooperative societies and associations, and provides practical information on the use of agricultural products.

Agricultural, food and economic education

The GRP involves the population by ensuring greater availability of food and easier access to health services. Through a microcredit programme for young people and women, the Green River Project aims to encourage the economic growth of each community and promote their banking habits.

The impact on the environment and the community

Developing socio-economic growth also means supporting farmers in an educational path to the profession. Based on an integrated system of extension services, the Green River Project contributes to improving the traditional agricultural system with new techniques and cultivation of food and economic interest. In addition, soil analysis, fertilisation plans and soil conservation are carried out via local facilities.
