Eni accompanies the Olympic Torch Relay for Milano Cortina 2026

Across Italy, 10,001 torchbearers will carry the Essential torches, the first to be certified for their recycled content

San Donato Milanese (Milan), 17 November 2025 — On December 6, the Olympic Flame will start its journey across Italy ahead of Milano Cortina 2026: thanks to the commitment of 10,001 torchbearers, the Olympic Torch Relay will light up also several areas where Eni is present. The company has chosen to support sport and its values as Premium Partner of the Milano Cortina 2026 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, and as Presenting Partner of the Olympic Torch Relay.

After the lighting of the Olympic Flame on November 26, that according to the tradition takes place in Olympia, Greece, and following its arrival in Rome on December 4, the Olympic Torch Relay for Milano Cortina 2026 will begin on December 6 and will reach all the Italian regions until its arrival in Milan, at the San Siro Stadium, on the evening of February 6, 2026. In every city, local communities will come together in a nationwide celebration: the passing of the Flame represents the fundamental values of the Olympic Movement, embodying the feelings of Friendship, Peace, Hope and Team Spirit.

The Olympic Torch Relay is an important opportunity to create moments of sharing among the communities and territories where Eni is present: each one of them tells the story, achievements and commitment of Eni and its subsidiaries in Italy. The route will reach:

  • December 6 and 7, Rome, Gazometro di Roma Ostiense and Eni’s headquarters in Palazzo Mattei.
  • December 17, Gela (Caltanissetta), Enilive biorefinery: converted in 2019 from a traditional refinery, it processes renewable feedstocks to produce Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF).
  • December 31, Brindisi, Versalis production site: set to be transformed with the construction of a stationary lithium battery plant (Eni Storage Systems, a joint venture established by Eni and FIB).
  • January 4, Ascoli Piceno, Finproject (Versalis) production site, specialised in high-quality polymer compounding for footwear, furniture and other sectors.

  • January 22, Venice (Porto Marghera), Enilive biorefinery, the world’s first example of conversion from a traditional refinery to a biorefinery for the production of HVO biofuels from 100% renewable raw materials; it is operational since 2014.
  • February 5, San Donato Milanese (Milan), Eni headquarters.

In addition, the Olympic Torch Relay will pass by other territories where Eni and its subsidiaries are present with plants and production sites: Terni on December 8; Livorno on December 12; Porto Torres (Sassari) on December 13; Priolo (Syracuse) on December 18; Frosinone on December 27; Potenza on December 28; Ferrara on January 7; Novara on January 13; Mantua on January 19; and Udine on January 24.

Among the 10,001 torchbearers taking part in the Olympic Torch Relay will be people who applied through Eni – which in recent months opened applications to everyone – and Eni people running in the places where they live and work, thus becoming part of a collective story that embraces the whole country. The protagonists will also be the ‘Essential’ torches, developed by Eni and Versalis, the first in the Olympic history to achieve the ReMade® Class A certification for the content of recycled material with which they were produced.

As a Presenting Partner, Eni will accompany the Olympic Torch Relay with engaging and entertaining activities involving athletes, the public and Eni people. The start of each stage is scheduled at 7.30 in the morning, and the last torchbearer of the day will light the cauldron around 19.30. Starting from the late afternoon there will be celebrations in the arrival locations, where Eni will be present with the Against all limits, Together we grow truck.

The Olympic Torches

The protagonists of the journey are the ‘Essential’ torches - which owe their name to their minimalist design - created in two versions, one for the Olympic Games and the other for the Paralympic Games. Eni and Versalis (Official Supporter of the Games) oversaw the creation of the torches, with Studio Carlo Ratti Associati responsible for design development and Cavagna Group for engineering and production. They differ in their colour gradient, but both feature a reflective, iridescent finish: green and blue for the Olympic torch, with bronze tones for the Paralympic torch. Light in weight - each weighs about 1,060 grams (excluding the cylinder) - they are made predominantly from recycled materials, in particular an aluminium-brass alloy. Sustainability is central to this iconic object: the torches have a system that allows them to be reused and refilled up to ten times, thus reducing the number of torches required for both relays. The handle contains an XL EXTRALIGHT® insert, an ultra-light polymeric material produced by Finproject (a Versalis company) from a Versalis polymer containing 60% bio-naphtha derived from renewable raw materials. The burner - the technological core of the torch - will run on bio-LPG produced at Enilive’s Gela biorefinery entirely from renewable feedstocks, mainly waste and residues such as used cooking oils, animal fats and residues from the agri-food industry.
