Maputo, 28 May 2026 – Eni Rovuma Basin, on behalf of the Area 4 Partners, has signed two Memoranda of Understanding with the Ministry of Health of Mozambique to implement new healthcare projects aimed at expanding the cancer diagnosis and treatment and at upgrading hospital facilities in the provinces of Cabo Delgado and Maputo. The ceremony was held at the presence of the Minister of Health, Dr. Ussene Isse and ERB Managing Director, Marica Calabrese.
The first MoU is focused on women cancer prevention providing access to high-quality screening services and benefitting areas populated by approximately 4.2 million women. Diagnostic capacity will be enhanced through the installation of 2 fully equipped mammography units at the Provincial Hospitals of Pemba and Matola, and the introduction of advanced cervical cancer screening models and Human Papillomavirus (HPV) testing in Maputo City. In parallel, training of healthcare professionals, namely radiologists and nurses, will be also provided.
The second MoU forecasts the rehabilitation and equipment of the surgical and neonatal units at the Pemba Provincial Hospital, the training of surgical, anaesthesiology, neonatology, and paediatric teams, as well as the improvement of the referral systems and emergency response capacity. This intervention will benefit approximately 200,000 residents of Pemba district and the population of Cabo Delgado province in general.
These significant initiatives reinforce the commitment of Eni and the Area 4 Partners to the sustainable development of Mozambique, contributing to strengthening the national healthcare system and to promoting more equitable access to quality healthcare services.
Eni has been present in Mozambique since 2006. Between 2011 and 2014, the company discovered vast natural gas resources in the Rovuma Basin, in the Coral, Mamba Complex and Agulha reservoirs, with around 2,400 billion cubic meters of gas in place. Coral South is the first project to produce gas from the Rovuma Basin, and Coral North will further leverage Mozambique’s significant reserves when on stream. Eni also contributes to improving the country’s economic diversification, access to education, health and water through implementation of a comprehensive sustainability plan.
Area 4 is operated by Mozambique Rovuma Venture S.p.A. (MRV), a joint venture owned by Eni, ExxonMobil, and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), which holds a 70% interest in the Area 4 Exploration and Production Concession Contract. In addition to MRV, the other partners are XRG, KOGAS, and ENH, each holding a 10% participation interest.
