Eni Rovuma Basin supports Maputo Central Hospital on the treatment of Cervical Cancer

Maputo (Mozambique), 12 June 2025 – Eni Rovuma Basin, on behalf of the Area 4 Partners and in partnership with the Community of Sant’Egidio, has donated various medical and surgical supplies to the Maputo Central Hospital. This joint action aims to strengthen the healthcare system and improve the national capacity for screening, diagnosing, and treating cervical cancer. The initiative is part of the health programs implemented by the Area 4 partners under the Coral Sul FLNG Project.

“This project marks a significant milestone in our ongoing efforts to improve women’s health in Maputo Province. Together with our partners and the Ministry of Health, we are committed to creating a healthier future for thousands of women, in line with our vision of promoting well-being and sustainable development in the countries where we operate,” said Marica Calabrese, Managing Director of Eni Rovuma Basin.

The women cervical cancer prevention program is implemented in partnership with the Community of Sant’Egidio since April 2023, and is in line with the national cervical cancer screening protocol launched by Mozambique’s Ministry of Health in February 2023. This protocol introduces HPV DNA testing as the primary diagnostic method for women with specific criteria or risk factors.

The project also aims to contribute to improving public health in Maputo, by reducing premature mortality caused by cervical cancer. Since the launching of the project, more than 6,000 women have been tested for HPV DNA at the Molecular Biology Laboratory at the Sant’Egidio Center in Zimpeto. This approach has enabled early detection of positive cases, ensuring appropriate specialized clinical follow-up at the Maputo Central Hospital. This represents an integrated strategy aimed at significantly reducing the mortality rates associated with the disease in Maputo City and Province.

Eni has been developing community health projects in Mozambique since 2013, in support of the priorities of the Country’s Ministry of Health.
