We have been operating in the country since 1959. We are currently active in the Exploration & Production and Gas & Power sectors in the offshore of the city of Tripoli and in the desert area.
Exploration & Production
Below are our 2019 production figures for the country.
We hold 11 mining licences (4 exploration permits and 7 production permits), regulated by Exploration and Production Sharing Agreements(EPSA). Exploration and development activities in the country are grouped into 6 contract areas with a 100% Working Interest (WI) in the exploration phase and 50% in the development phase. Onshore we are present in area A, B with the Bu-Attifel field, in area E with the El Feel field (Eni 33.3% WI), KNOC 16.6% WI and in areas F and D with the Wafa field. Our offshore activities are concentrated in Area C, with the Bouri oil field, and Area D with Bahr Essalam.
During 2018, development activities were related to the start-up of production of the Bahr Essalam offshore phase 2 project, with the start-up of 10 new offshore wells and the completion of the gas treater upgrading in Mellitah and Sabratha, which increased processing capacity to 1,100 million cubic feet per day. At the same time activities took place to optimise production at the Wafa field in the Libyan desert. In October 2018, we signed a letter of intent (LOI) with the Libyan National Oil Corporation and BP, which set in motion the process of assigning a 42.5% interest to Eni and BP's EPSA operatorship in Libya, with the aim of relaunching exploration and development activities and promoting favourable conditions for investment in Libya. The LOI also strengthens the commitment to contribute to the social development of the country through the implementation of social initiatives, including specific education and technical training programmes.
Gas & Power
The following 2019 data show Eni's activities in the country.
The Libyan gas produced by the Wafa and Bahr Essalam fields operated by Mellitah Oil & Gas, an operating company jointly owned by Eni and NOC, is brought to Italy through the Green Stream pipeline. The 520 kilometre natural gas pipeline crosses the Mediterranean Sea connecting the Mellitah treater on the Libyan coast with Gela in Sicily. The natural gas pipeline has a capacity of around 8 billion cubic meters per year.
Our initiatives in the countries where we work are based on an integrated approach that engages local communities and partners to share expertise and funds with them. In line with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), our initiatives help improve access to energy, economic diversification, education and vocational training, land protection, access to water, sanitation and health services for communities.
In Libya, specifically, our initiatives are geared towards ensuring a constant electricity supply (Sdg 7) by helping manage four power stations, training staff, researching renewable energy solutions and training people on how to run supply facilities safely. We are also working on improving the health sector (Sdg 3), giving direct support to healthcare facilities and training medical staff.
