The Africa of renewable energy
Renewable energy sources have considerable growth potential in Africa given the continent’s high solar and wind resources.
When the need to upgrade power generation processes in order to reduce the carbon footprint became pressing and the enormous contribution that renewable energy could make became clear, launching new renewable energy projects on the continent was a natural step.
On January 2023, we announced a significant new gas discovery in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Furthermore, the Chief Executive Officer of Eni, Claudio Descalzi, met The President of the Arab Republic of Egypt to discuss Eni’s ongoing and future plans for the energy transition and decarbonisation.
During the meeting, a Memorandum of Intent (“MoI”) to collaborate on emission reduction technologies, including gas flaring reduction and gas valorization, was signed.
On January 2023, Eni, through Vår Energi, has been awarded 12 new licenses, of which 5 as operator, as a result of the “Awards in Predefined Areas 2022” (APA) by the Ministry of Petroleum and Energy of Norway.
The results of the APA 2022 consolidate Vår Energi’s position as a major independent energy company in Norway.
On December 2022 we made a new gas discovery offshore Cyprus with the well Zeus-1, drilled in Block 6, 162 km off the coastline in 2300 meters of water depth.
Zeus-1 is the third consecutive discovery in Block 6. It follows Cronos-1 and Calypso-1 and the gas in place associated to this reservoir is preliminarily estimated between 2 and 3 TCF.
In June 2022, Eni Côte d’Ivoire, in partnership with the NGO AVSI, launched a project to promote the adoption of improved cookstoves among the most vulnerable rural communities in Ivory Coast through the distribution of 100,000 cookstoves in six years.
By virtue of the environmental and social benefits induced by these improved cookstoves, we will contribute to compensating the Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions of the Oil & Gas business project Baleine, which will be the first Net Zero development in the African continent.
Our global presence allows us to deal with the short and medium-term challenges posed by the energy sector.
