Algeria

We helped expand access to maternal and child health services in southern Algeria, in partnership with the Algerian Ministry of Health.

Eni Foundation has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ministry of Health, Population and Hospital Reform of the People's Democratic Republic of Algeria to contribute to the country's policy aimed at expanding access to maternal and childcare services in the South of the country. Together with the Ministry, we identified the need to support healthcare provision in the South, reaching a population of 552,539 people. We focused on strengthening hospital services in the region through the supply of medical equipment and training for healthcare staff. Efforts also included extending home‑based care in remote areas and deploying mobile clinics, with the aim of reducing maternal and infant morbidity and mortality. The public hospital in Ouargla is the only referral hospital in the city and is the first port of call for medical emergencies from the most remote areas of the south-east of the country. Since 2013, considerable efforts have been made to enhance the facility's capabilities by strengthening its medical and paramedical staff, acquiring medical equipment, expanding the facility and modernising certain services.

Project objectives

Eni Foundation contributed to lowering maternal and child health risks in southern Algeria by supporting local health authorities to extend access to maternal and child health services in the region.

The project’s main objectives were:

  • strengthening the capacity of maternal and child health services at Hassi Messaoud Hospital
  • bolstering maternal and child health services across the southern provinces
  • upgrading minor facilities and systems at the general hospital in Hassi Messaoud
  • training healthcare professionals
  • raising community awareness through mobile clinics
  • providing a 4×4 ambulance.
