Il Centro Ricerche per le Energie Rinnovabili e l'Ambiente di Novara vince il premio messo in palio da MIT- Technology Review e dalla Bologna Business School destinato a giovani innovatori con meno di 35 anni. È stata premiata la ricerca del chimico industriale Andrea Chiodini che ha sviluppato un innovativo sistema automatico per il disinquinamento delle acque di falda contaminate da sostanze organiche. La ricerca ha sfruttato una nuova generazione di filtri idrofobici ideati e realizzati presso il Centro Eni di Novara. Questi filtri sono formati da supporti di acciaio sinterizzato sui quali è depositato uno speciale polimero che rende la superficie idrofobica e lipofila, cioè impermeabili all’acqua, ma che permettono benzina, diesel, olio o altri idrocarburi di attraversarla.
I filtri costituiscono il cuore di uno speciale dispositivo che, immerso direttamente nella falda contaminata attraverso un pozzo artesiano, recupera e pompa in superficie la sola sostanza organica inquinante e non tutta la miscela olio-acqua. In questo modo si evitano numerosi trattamenti di separazione e smaltimento del liquido estratto che, secondo le normative, deve essere interamente considerato come un rifiuto. Il vantaggio rispetto agli “skimmers”, (la tecnologia tradizionale che prevede la semplice aspirazione dell’intera componente liquida) risulta evidente: la combinazione di questi speciali filtri e dell’elettronica di bordo permette al dispositivo di effettuare un efficace disinquinamento delle falde contaminate senza necessità di smaltire grandi quantità di liquidi e senza intervento umano, se non nella fase di posizionamento iniziale e nell’ordinaria manutenzione. Le sperimentazioni sul campo dimostrano la selettività dei filtri in condizioni reali e l’efficacia del sistema automatico di disinquinamento. Dopo le prove effettuate in Sicilia nel 2014 e in Sardegna nel 2015, ora la terza generazione del dispositivo sta lavorando da mesi in totale autonomia presso un terzo sito in Sicilia, eliminando efficacemente le eventuali sostanze contaminanti presenti. Andrea Chiodini e il gruppo di lavoro interdisciplinare di cui fa parte presso il Centro Eni di Novara stanno ora lavorando su ulteriori miglioramenti del sistema e della sensoristica del dispositivo automatico, di cui è prevista la produzione industriale e la commercializzazione. Il dispositivo sarà denominato “Eni Hydrocarbon Recovery” e sarà portato nel mercato con il marchio “e-HyRec”.
