Siamo presenti in questo Paese della Penisola Araba dagli anni Sessanta, dove abbiamo operato nel settore dell'esplorazione e produzione di olio e gas. Dal 1984 siamo attivi nel settore della raffinazione e chimica tramite la nostra società controllata Ecofuel.
A settembre 2022 l’Amministratore Delegato di Eni, Claudio Descalzi ha incontrato Il Ministro degli Investimenti dell’Arabia Saudita per illustrare la strategia di decarbonizzazione della compagnia, concentrandosi sulle molteplici iniziative industriali e tecnologie a servizio della transizione energetica. Le parti hanno poi condiviso il ruolo dell’Arabia Saudita nell’ambito delle attuali sfide poste dal mercato energetico. A margine dell’incontro, è stato inoltre firmato un Memorandum d’Intesa volto a promuovere la cooperazione tra Eni, istituzioni e aziende saudite nell’ambito dello sviluppo sostenibile nel Paese, nei settori della mobilità sostenibile, dell’economia circolare e della chimica.
A febbraio 2019 abbiamo firmato un accordo con SABIC, una grande azienda pubblica del Medio Oriente e dell'Arabia Saudita, per sviluppare insieme una nuova tecnologia che trasforma il gas naturale in gas di sintesi con cui produrre combustibili di alta qualità e prodotti chimici, per esempio il metanolo. La partnership prevede anche la realizzazione di un impianto industriale dimostrativo che sarà costruito e gestito all'interno di un nostro sito. Qui svilupperemo la tecnologia basata sull'ossidazione parziale catalitica a breve tempo di contatto del gas naturale (SCT-CPO). Tramite Ecofuel deteniamo una partecipazione del 10% nella Saudi European Petrochemical Company (Ibn Zahr), costituita nel 1984, che ha realizzato e gestisce sia impianti di MTBE (un componente alto-ottanico per le benzine) con una capacità di 1,4 milioni di tonnellate all’anno nel complesso petrolchimico di Al Jubail, sia impianti per la produzione del polipropilene, con una capacità di 1,2 milioni tonnellate all’anno.
Per quanto riguarda il settore Refining&Marketing e Chimica, nello specifico la disponibilità di ossigenati, la disponibilità totale di prodotto per Eni è assicurata per l’87% da produzioni proprie ottenute negli stabilimenti in Italia (Ravenna), in Arabia Saudita (in joint venture con Sabic) ed in Venezuela (in joint venture con Pequiven) e per il 13% da acquisti.
