We have been present as an operator in China since 1984 and our production activities are concentrated in offshore blocks located in the South China Sea. In the Refining & Marketing sector Eni has been present in the country since 2012, with headquarters in Shanghai, and is active in the lubricants market. Today our activities extend across sectors Exploration & Production and Refining & Marketing.

Exploration & Production

In 2015 average hydrocarbon production, net to Eni, amounted to 3,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day. The activities are concentrated in the South China Sea over a total developed and undeveloped area of 7,056 square kilometres with 5 offshore field into production. Exploration and production activities in China are regulated by Production Sharing Agreements (PSA). Production comes from offshore Blocks 16/08 and 16/19, through eight fixed platforms with underwater connections to a floating production, storage and offloading unit (FPSO). The blocks are operated by the CACT-OG consortium. Oil production for the domestic market is mainly supplied by the HZ25-4 field (Eni 49%). The production of natural gas supplied from HZ21-1 field is transferred by undersea pipeline to the Zhuhai terminal (near Macao) and sold to the Chinese state company CNOOC. In 2009 two new PSAs were signed related to Blocks 3/27 and 28/20 located in the South China Sea near the areas operated by CACT-OG over a total area of 18,000 square kilometres. In the current exploratory phase, Eni’s participation is equal to 100%.

In 2014, Eni signed a new Production Sharing Contract (“PSC”) with CNOOC for the exploration of a block off the island of Hainan, in the South China Sea. The block, called 50/34, covers an area of approximately 2,000 square kilometres in conventional waters in the Qiongdongnan basin. The exploration period is divided into three phases, and will last for six and a half years. This new PSC confirms Eni’s interest in continuing and consolidating its presence in China, particularly in the South China Sea, where the company has been collaborating with the Chinese National Oil Companies since the mid-80s, both in exploration and in production.
