At the end of 2008 Eni, which had already operated in the country from 1987 to 2004, acquired six new high potential exploration licences, over a total area of 5,283 square kilometres. Two licences (D3 and D4) are located in conventional waters in the prolific north Gabonese basin, whereas the remaining four (E2, F2, F3 and F7) are located in the onshore basin. All six licences have been granted for an initial explorative phase of four years, renewable for two further periods of four and three years respectively.
