Improving the treatment of water in oil-related activities

The Environmental Protection Prize went to Menachem Elimelech for the research project Innovative Process of Forward Osmosis for the Treatment of Water. Menachem Elimelech is a professor at Yale University (USA), and is considered a pioneer in the application of the process of “forward osmosis” for the desalination of water with high salinity levels. The innovative process, which uses low-grade heat as its energy source, is used to treat water associated with oil activities, proving to be more energy efficient and environmentally friendly than current desalination technologies.
