We recently reviewed our corporate mission to make it closer to the values that inspire us every day. In fact, our mission now ends with this statement: “We believe in the value of long term partnerships with the countries and communities where we operate”. This is because a solid and constructive relationship with the countries where we re present, with the institutions that represent them and the communities that live there constitute an invaluable asset, and one that we intend to preserve and grow over time. Due to the characteristics of the industry in which we operate – as well as the specific business culture that distinguishes us - dedicating ourselves to building a healthy, respectful and lasting relationship with the countries that host us is the best possible investment we can make.
We want to represent in a complete, transparent and fair manner the legitimate interests of the company to institutions in the countries in which we work.
It is also for this reason that, worldwide, in our relationship with institutions, we operate according to criteria based on fairness and transparency. At Eni, we believe that an open and fair exchange with institutions is the best way to legitimately contribute to creating the social, cultural and regulatory conditions that can help us to achieve our aim of creating long-term value for all our stakeholders.
We present our point of view to our institutional interlocutors and talk with them - in the belief that they can make a useful contribution based on extensive experience - both on energy issues and more general policy issues - such as climate change, protecting the environment, human rights, safety - convinced that open and direct exchange enhances public understanding to the benefit of both the company and the community.
In order to ensure transparency in the representation of our interests, Eni has structures in place that are permanently dedicated to Institutional Relations, so that the people delegated to manage institutional dialogue can be easily identified, while at the same time ensuring the consistency and coherence of our relational strategies. In line with legal provisions, all of our meetings with institutional representatives are recorded. Moreover, in our relations with Institutions we also operate through the trade associations that represent us in Italy, Europe and the rest of the world.
We have been included on the Transparency Register of the European Parliament and Commission for many years, and we comply with its Code of Conduct governing relations with EU institutions. In addition, in the United States of America we have an office, located in Washington DC, that oversees ongoing and structured liaison with stakeholders and US institutions and we are enrolled on the register under the Lobbying Disclosure Act, to ensure the transparency of our business. We were among the first in Italy to support the establishment of the Transparency Register of the Ministry of Economic Development and of the Chamber of Deputies. And, more generally, we are in favour of initiatives aimed at removing any possible form of opacity from the representation of interests. In this context, it is our hope that Italy will adopt a law to regulate, in a unified and balanced way, all lobbying activities, in order to guarantee that such activities are conducted in a professional, transparent and responsible manner, in the interests of both the community and industry.
While Eni does not make donations to political parties, it does support many scientific, cultural and social initiatives around the world. However, we do evaluate all requests applying strict due diligence processes to ensure that any contributions can not be misrepresented.
We constantly review and update our organisational and governance tools to ensure compliance with current national and international legislation and best practice.
