We adopt the best strategies and use the most modern technologies to reduce emissions of air pollutants for the protection of air quality.
We are committed to applying the Best Available Techniques (BATs) and the best procedural standards for emissions reduction and the control of the main atmospheric pollutants: nitrogen and sulphur oxides, particulate matter, carbon monoxide and aromatic compounds. In line with environmental permits (e.g. VIA, AIA), some facilities, located in particularly sensitive areas, have adopted targeted measures to control and contain dust as well as odorous emissions: “The management of odorous emissions (PDF, only Italian version).
We apply the best techniques and standards to reduce emissions and control the major atmospheric pollutants.
Among the main atmospheric pollutants associated with industrial activities are the nitrogen (NOx) and sulphur (SOx) oxides: the first derives from the typical features of the combustion process (oxygen and temperature), the second from sulphur oxidation in fossil fuels.
In 2016, SOx emissions continued to fall (-16.5%, or equal to more than -1,760 tons compared to 2015), significantly influenced by the production trends in the downstream R & M and Chemicals sectors (-29.5%), the use of a different mix of fuels at traditional refineries and the programmed stop of the Versalis cracking unit at the Versalis petrochemical plant in Dunkerque. In the E & P sector, SOx emissions (47% of the total) were stable, while in the G & P sector they rose (+27.2% compared to 2015) both for the contribution of LNG tankers (due to the different operating use of ships ) and EniPower (for the chemical composition of the syngas used at the Ferrera Erbognone plant).
In 2016, NOx emissions were down by 18.8% compared to 2015. In E & P, in particular, which accounts for over 76% of Eni’s consolidated data, the parameter decreased both in absolute terms (a reduction of more than -15,000 tons) and that related to production (-24.5%) mainly due to a lower consumption of gas at NAOC in Nigeria. In the G & P sector, Enipower’s specific emission factor decreased thanks to the full operation of VeLoNOX burner systems. The contribution of R & M and Chemicals remained essentially stable (-0.9% compared to 2015).
Emissions of non-methane volatile compounds (or NMVOCs) fell by 24% compared to 2014, thanks to the contribution of all sectors, in particular of E & P (about -5,200 tons) due to the reduction in gas flaring. Meanwhile, particulate (PST) emissions are increasing (+11.7% compared to 2014) due to activities in the E & P sector (increased production in Angola and Norway) and R & M (Sannazzaro refinery).
