For Eni, the protection and preservation of the territory is a priority in its environmental policy and the company takes full responsibility for the remediation of the sites where it operates.
We are responsible for the remediation of the sites where we work also as a way of protecting sustainable development.
Total expenditure for land remediation in 2016 came to approximately €233.9 million, up 10.9% over the previous year. The main item of expenditure (72%) is emergency safety and reclamation of groundwater. 56% of the volume of reclamation waste is groundwater. In volumetric terms, the 53% reduction compared with last year (the equivalent of more than 2.5 million tons) is linked to the ongoing process of disengagement from the waste regime, pursuant to art. 243 of Legislative Decree 152/06 (as replaced by Article 41, paragraph 1, of Law No 98 of 2013).
The volume of activity is a demonstration of the complexity and variability of Eni’s situation, which ranges from 17 sites of national interest (refineries, petrochemical plants and dismantled sites) to the R & M area’s retail outlets or E & P drilling sites. Remediation activities are essentially in line with previous years with the continued implementation of approved projects and the technical and administrative follow-ups concerning the numerous ongoing processes.
The most significant projects are carried out mainly by Syndial, a company specialised in the remediation of contaminated decommissioned sites (64% of expenditure in 2016), and R & M and Chemicals sites (34%). In 2016, the transfer of remediation activities to Syndial from the business lines continued, including the divestment by R & M of its decommissioned sites business activity.
