We manage oil spills in order to ensure the protection of the environment and actively participate in international prevention initiatives.
All 2016 oil spills can be exclusively attributed to the E & P, R & M and Chemicals sectors. Spilled volumes fell by more than 65% compared with 2015, a trend that covered both sabotage and terrorism (-10,358 barrels compared with 2015) and spills resulting from operational accidents (-475 barrels compared with 2015), and affected both sectors. 88% of the volumes resulting from operating oil spills in 2016 were attributable to the E & P sector, of which 75% were located in Nigeria, Egypt and Algeria. Across the sector, despite an increase in the number of events compared with 2015 (73 vs. 59), volumes were down by around 13%, mainly due to a reduction of the phenomenon in Nigeria (-199 barrels compared with 2015) thanks to revamping activities on some of the lines. There was also a reduction in the index of production oil spills (-10.5%), which fell to 1.15 barrels/Mbarrels (1.28 barrels/Mbarrels in 2015).
In the R & M and Chemical sectors, operational spills fell by more than 290 barrels compared with 2015. In 2016, spills from sabotage and terrorist acts were recorded in only two countries: Nigeria (E & P) and Italy ( pipeline network).
In the E & P sector, which accounts for 84% of spillage volumes, the phenomenon declined both in terms of the number of events (-10.8% compared with 2015) and in related volumes (-64.3%). These results are due to measures taken in close co-ordination with government bodies, both for prevention and in response, with a significant increase in the number of teams present in the territory for both aerial and land surveillance and for action to ensure the early containment of eventual spills. Compared with 2015, there was also an improvement in chemical spills, with a reduction in both the number of events (43 to 24) and relative volumes (-98.5%). All 2016 spills can be attributed to the E & P sector, with the exception of a limited (0.15 barrel) event, that occurred in the R & M and Chemicals sector at the Versalis plant in Szazhalombatta, in Hungary. The most significant E & P event (about 17.6 barrels) was recorded by the subsidiary Eni Norge.
In recent years there has been a reduction in the volume of spills, in particular in the Exploration & Production sector.
Our prevention efforts include a range of activities, such as: specific management training, emergency response assessment exercises, the application of advanced technology for pipeline security and emergency response drills. Eni also participates in numerous international initiatives including:

(a) In line with international standards all the values above refer to events involving more than 1 barrel. The data referring to sabotage includes oil spills due to attempted oil theft and vandalism.
(b) Part of the environmental spending and investments set out in the “Environmental Management System” table.
The table does not contain information relating to the subsidiary Versalis SpA, since an agreement is being finalised for the sale of a controlling stake.
