As a first step, our objective is to achieve net zero emissions (Scope 1) in our upstream business by 2030.
Eni acknowledges main challenge of its sector is the energy access in an efficient and sustainable way for all while combating climate change
Eni’s decarbonization strategy is integrated in its business model and develops in short, medium and long term actions with a constant commitment in scientific and technological research aiming at achieving maximum efficiency in the decarbonization process and at finding innovative solutions that ease energy transition. In the short term, Eni’s strategy is based on both efficiency increase and GHG emissions reduction of operated activities, on a resilient and low-carbon Oil & Gas portfolio and on the renewables sources and green business development. In the medium term Eni’ 2030 objective is to achieve net zero carbon footprint and to become “carbon neutral” in the long term, developing an integrated energy transition plan based.
Eni recognizes the scientific evidence on climate change of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and was among the signers of Paris Pledge, supporting the objectives contained in the Paris Agreement.
The adoption, on 12 December 2015, of the Paris Accords at the end of COP21, was an historic event that not only exceeded the expected goals, but was also supported by a global political consensus (195 countries, Responsible for 95% of global GHG emissions). The most important new feature of the Agreement was the overcoming of the division between industrialised and developing countries, which had been the basis of the Kyoto Protocol and historic climate change negotiations. Now all the participating countries are committed to containing the emission climate-altering gases in order to limit the increase in global temperature. Eni welcomed the success of the Paris meeting and joined the Paris Pledge for Action initiative, put forward by President Laurent Fabius to demonstrate the commitment of non-governmental stakeholders to adopting clear rules in line with the objectives of the Accords. In this respect, in the Oil & Gas sector, Eni is playing a leading role in many important partnerships and, in particular, with the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative and the Paying for Carbon Coalition, which aim at defining concrete solutions, in both the short and long term, for the energy transition to a low carbon future.
