Eni has defined an integrated climate strategy to mitigate its impact on the climate and reduce the risks associated with climate change.
Eni recognises the scientific evidence outlined in the 5th Assessment Report of the IPCCC and the need to limit the rise in global temperature to less than 2°C. We are one of the leading players in the energy sector and we are conscious of having an important and responsible role to play in the fight against climate change. This is why we have defined a strategy for the reduction of climate-altering emissions, that integrates operational and management activities for the development of research in technological innovation.
Eni’s road-map for a low carbon future is based on three elements.
The adoption, on 12 December 2015, of the Paris Accords at the end of COP21, was an historic event that not only exceeded the expected goals, but was also supported by a global political consensus (195 countries, Responsible for 95% of global GHG emissions). The most important new feature of the Agreement was the overcoming of the division between industrialised and developing countries, which had been the basis of the Kyoto Protocol and historic climate change negotiations. Now all the participating countries are committed to containing the emission climate-altering gases in order to limit the increase in global temperature. Eni welcomed the success of the Paris meeting and joined the Paris Pledge for Action initiative, put forward by President Laurent Fabius to demonstrate the commitment of non-governmental stakeholders to adopting clear rules in line with the objectives of the Accords. In this respect, in the Oil & Gas sector, Eni is playing a leading role in many important partnerships and, in particular, with the Oil & Gas Climate Initiative and the Paying for Carbon Coalition, which aim at defining concrete solutions, in both the short and long term, for the energy transition to a low carbon future.
Emissions reduction plays an important role in the protection of the environment, for us an essential part of sustainable development.
