Solar Energy Project

R&D projects in the field of solar energy and storage have as their objective the development of applications for the supply of electricity and steam in the oil & gas sector, reducing the overall energy footprint (e.g. in construction) and the implementation of sustainable initiatives to make available electricity in areas not currently or poorly served (e.g. sub-Saharan Africa). Research activities are focused on the design, development and subsequent application of technological solutions with a high innovation coefficient with respect to the state of the art. Research projects this sector are continuing in collaboration with MIT in Cambridge, MA (USA). In the context of the possible applications of intermittent renewable or non-programmable energy, such as solar, energy storage (the “Storage” project) aims to ensure continuity in the supply of energy.




  • Advanced organic photovoltaic

    Eni’s advanced organic photovoltaic project (Advanced OPV) aims to create solar devices based on innovative technologies. In fact, such devices use polymers instead of silicon as a photo-catalytic material. The potential advantages include the possibility of producing printed organic photovoltaic modules on flexible surfaces. OPV technology can also be integrated into electronic devices and in buildings, as well as providing electricity form remote and difficult to reach areas. Eni collaborates on advanced solar technology with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) in Oulu.

  • Concentrated Solar Power

    Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) is a highly innovative technology that can trace its roots back to the legend of Archimedes’ burning mirrors: a solar system covered with mirrors that concentrate the sun’s energy towards a tube, containing a liquid composed of a mix of dissolved salts. The energy produced is used for heating or for producing electricity. Thanks to solar thermodynamic concentration it is possible to accumulate energy even when the sun is not shining. CSP has been designed by Eni, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A pilot plant is due to be built in the near future in Gela.

  • Luminescent Solar Concentrators

    Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSCs) are transparent coloured panels that absorb part of the sun’s light and re-emit it at a higher wavelength. As with optical fibre, the radiation is directed to the edges, making them luminescent. Here, small photovoltaic cells transform the radiation into electricity. Innovative  LSCs have been created to facilitate and expand the use of photovoltaics and can be used in agriculture, architecture and infrastructures.
