Eni has been operating in Italy since 1953

Activities

  • Development

Main development activities concerned, in the Adriatic and Ionic Sea, maintenance and optimization of production, mainly at the Barbara, Cervia/Arianna and Morena fields and start-up of Clara NW project; In Val d'Agri, the development plan is progressing in line with the commitments agreed with the Basilicata Region.

  • Distribution of Refined Products

In Italy Eni is the leader in the distribution of petroleum products with a market share of 24.3%, down by 0.2 percentage points from 2015. In 2016, sales in the retail market (5.93 million tonnes) showed a decrease on 2015 (about 30 ktonnes, -0.5%) due to a reduction in volumes marketed in Eni’s highway segment, partially offset by a slight increase in volumes marketed in Eni’s owned stations. On 31 December 2016, the retail network in Italy consisted of 4,396 service stations.

  • Exploration

Eni’s activities in Italy are deployed in the Adriatic and Ionian Sea, the Central Southern Apennines, mainland and offshore Sicily and the Po Valley, on a total developed and undeveloped acreage of 20,818 square kilometres (16,767 square kilometres net to Eni).

  • Gas Sales

Domestic sales amounted to 38.43 billion cubic meters, stable compared to 2015.

  • Gas Supply

The basic demand for Eni’s natural gas in Italy is predominantly catered for by supplies coming from abroad, mainly from Russia, Algeria, the North Sea and Libya.

  • Power Production

Eni’s power generation sites are located in Ferrera Erbognone, Ravenna, Mantova, Brindisi, Ferrara and Bolgiano. In 2016, power generation was 21.78 TWh, up by 1.09 TWh or 5.3% from 2015, mainly due to increasing demand.

  • Power Sales

In 2016 power sales (37.05 TWh) were directed to the free market (74%), the Italian power exchange (15%), industrial sites (9%) and others (2%).

  • Production

In 2016, Eni’s oil and gas production amounted to 133 kboe/d. Eni’s exploration and development activities in Italy are regulated by concession contracts (50 operated onshore and 64 operated offshore) and exploration licenses (12 onshore and 9 offshore).

  • Refining

Eni’s refining system in Italy is made up of thre directly owned refineries (Sannazzaro, Livorno and Taranto) and a 50% ownership of the refinery in Milazzo. Each of Eni’s refineries has operating and strategic features that aim to maximise the associated value of the plant structure, its geographic location with respect to end markets, integration with Eni’s activities and the development of ‘green’ technologies.

Projects

  • Alternating School-Work project

The Alternating School-Work project is one of the initiatives introduced by Eni following the signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Italian Ministry of Education (MIUR) and Ministry of Labour and Social Policies (MLPS) to promote full integration between business and educational establishments. The programme aims to provide an overview of the current energy situation and help children in their career choices, allowing them to discover a range of professional roles at Eni from up close and encouraging them to develop the transferrable skills needed for successful entry into the world of work.

  • First Level Apprenticeship

The First Level Apprenticeship project, another of the initiatives that aims to promote full integration between business and educational establishments, involves students carrying out work experience and training at Eni’s premises alongside their regular studies. This is achieved through on-the-job training, traditional classroom-based courses and e-learning. The students involved come predominantly from technical and vocational colleges and attend various Eni industrial sites, from the Gela, Venice and Sannazzaro refineries to the Oil Centres in Val d’Agri. They are supported by tutors from Eni, who work closely with their school teachers.

  • Green Data Centre

The Eni Green Data Centre, which came into operation in 2013, was developed with the aim of ensuring the highest level of reliability for all of the company’s IT requirements, and to achieve world-beating “green” energy efficiency results. The facility hosts all of the central processing systems, both for management systems and the processing of HPC simulations.

  • Poseidon

Eni’s Poseidon Project transforms decommissioned gas extraction platforms, off the coast of the Romagna region in the Adriatic Sea, into centres for the study of marine fauna and flora and the protection of endangered species. With the creation of an authentic science park, the first of its kind in Europe, the project is helping to protect biodiversity.

  • Project Italy

In the area of renewables, Eni has launched the Progetto Italia, an industrial conversion project that foresees the creation of mainly photovoltaic plants at industrial sites reclaimed by Syndial that are available for use and of low interest for other activities. Many of these areas can be converted into green energy production facilities.

  • School Projects in Basilicata

Eni has confirmed its support for school and cultural projects in Basilicata, with initiatives aimed at meeting local needs in partnership with the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei, in line with agreements signed with the Basilicata Region.

  • UN Global Compact LEAD Board Programme

Eni was one of six companies in the world to join the pilot phase of the UN Global Compact LEAD Board Programme, a programme aimed at the boards of directors of companies in order to strengthen their awareness of sustainability.
