For Eni technological innovation is a key element in making access to new energy resources, improving the use of existing resources and, at the same time, reducing environmental impact both efficient and effective.

  • Advanced organic photovoltaic

    Eni’s advanced organic photovoltaic project (Advanced OPV) aims to create solar devices based on innovative technologies. In fact, such devices use polymers instead of silicon as a photo-catalytic material. The potential advantages include the possibility of producing printed organic photovoltaic modules on flexible surfaces. OPV technology can also be integrated into electronic devices and in buildings, as well as providing electricity form remote and difficult to reach areas. Eni collaborates on advanced solar technology with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Technical Research Centre of Finland (VTT) in Oulu.

  • Concentrated Solar Power

    Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) is a highly innovative technology that can trace its roots back to the legend of Archimedes’ burning mirrors: a solar system covered with mirrors that concentrate the sun’s energy towards a tube, containing a liquid composed of a mix of dissolved salts. The energy produced is used for heating or for producing electricity. Thanks to solar thermodynamic concentration it is possible to accumulate energy even when the sun is not shining. CSP has been designed by Eni, in collaboration with the Politecnico di Milano and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). A pilot plant is due to be built in the near future in Gela.

  • Ecofining™

    Developed by Eni and tested in its laboratories, it allows the production of high-quality sustainable biofuels, while reducing particulate emissions and improving engine efficiency, in line with current legislation and European directives. Eni’s innovative Ecofining™ technology has been applied to the catalytic hydrodesulphurisation section of the refinery in Venice where, since 2014, Eni has been manufacturing its new Eni Diesel +, the fuel with the largest organic and renewable component (15%), the use of which has demonstrated a significant reduction in pollutant emissions.

  • HPC

    At its Green Data Centre in Ferrera Erbognone (in the province of Pavia), Eni has added a new HPC4 (High Performance Computing) super computer, to provide strategic support to the company’s process of digital transformation across the entire value chain, from the exploration and development phase of oil and gas reservoirs, to the management of the big data generated in the operational phase by all our productive assets (upstream, refining and petrochemicals). HPC4 has a peak performance of 18.6 PetaFlop/s which, combined with the supercomputing system already in operation (HPC3), increases Eni’s computational peak capacity to 22.4 PFlop/s. Together, Eni’s two mega-computers constitute Europe’s most powerful system in the oil and gas industry.

  • Luminescent Solar Concentrators

    Luminescent Solar Concentrators (LSCs) are transparent coloured panels that absorb part of the sun’s light and re-emit it at a higher wavelength. As with optical fibre, the radiation is directed to the edges, making them luminescent. Here, small photovoltaic cells transform the radiation into electricity. Innovative  LSCs have been created to facilitate and expand the use of photovoltaics and can be used in agriculture, architecture and infrastructures.
