Bio-refineries

The Bio-refineries Project project is the first example in the world of the conversion of a conventional oil refinery. At a difficult time for refining in Europe, Eni has identified an opportunity to reuse the catalytic hydrodesulphurization section of its refinery in Venice by reconfiguring it in a biorefinery.Through its Bio-refineries Project, Eni has reconfigured the refineries in Venice and Gela by identifying innovative solutions using “green” cycles that are both environmentally and economically sustainable.

Plants

  • Porto Marghera Biorefinery

    This first plant, in Porto Marghera, involved investment costs that were 80% lower than the construction of a new biorefinery, and enabling the redevelopment of an existing industrial site. The site is integrated with the local area and its reconversion has the full support of local economic players as it facilitated the maintenance of employment levels, at a level only slightly lower than before the crisis. The Venice biorefinery is certified according to the 2BSvs standard.

Technologies

  • Ecofining™

    Developed and tested by Eni in its laboratories, it can produce very high quality sustainable biofuel, which exceeds the limits of existing fuels on the market (the so-called FAME - Fatty Acid Methyl Esters), reducing particulate emissions and improving engine efficiency, in line with current legislation and European directives.
    The result of the innovative Ecofining™ technology, Eni Diesel+ is the new diesel produced at the biorefinery in Venice, which, with a 15% renewable component, maintains engine efficiency and helps to reduce CO2 emissions.
