Bio-refineries

Through its Bio-refineries Project, Eni has reconfigured the refineries in Venice and Gela by identifying innovative solutions using “green” cycles that are both environmentally and economically sustainable. In particular, a business model has been developed that, through the upgrading of existing plants and Eni proprietary technologies, facilitates the conversion of unconventional and low-cost biological raw materials, such as vegetable oils and spent cooking oil, into high added value finished products (e.g. green diesel, green LPG, green naphtha).

Project Key-Facts

  • Start Date 2013
  • Green Diesel product capacity (tons/year) 360
  • Reduction System of NOx emissions 45
  • Reduction System of SO₂ emissions 65
  • Reduction System of particulate 32
  • Investment (million) €200

Plants

  • Porto Marghera Biorefinery

This first plant, in Porto Marghera, involved investment costs that were 80% lower than the construction of a new biorefinery, and enabling the redevelopment of an existing industrial site. The site is integrated with the local area and its reconversion has the full support of local economic players as it facilitated the maintenance of employment levels, at a level only slightly lower than before the crisis. The Venice biorefinery is certified according to the 2BSvs standard.

Technologies

  • Ecofining™

Developed by Eni and tested in its laboratories, it allows the production of high-quality sustainable biofuels, while reducing particulate emissions and improving engine efficiency, in line with current legislation and European directives. Eni’s innovative Ecofining™ technology has been applied to the catalytic hydrodesulphurisation section of the refinery in Venice where, since 2014, Eni has been manufacturing its new Eni Diesel +, the fuel with the largest organic and renewable component (15%), the use of which has demonstrated a significant reduction in pollutant emissions.

Second and third generation of Biofuel

Eni will produce for the first time in the Porto Marghera refinery green bio‐fuel from vegetable oil and biomass and therefore lowering the CO2 emission compared to conventional fuels.
